Mother With H1N1 Dies Month After Giving Birth
Woman Never Woke From Coma

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 31-year-old Northland woman who is believed to have contracted the H1N1 flu died Monday from complications a month after giving birth.

Her child has no medical problems from exposure to the illness.

Angela Stuteville came down with flu symptoms just before the birth of her son Jaxson.

The infant was put in isolation as a precaution and Stuteville's condition grew worse. She was put on a ventilator while doctors induced a coma.

She developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, which has a high mortality rate and is a condition that can be brought about by the H1N1 virus.

Stuteville never came out of the coma. Though she saw her son briefly, she never got to hold her newborn.

NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City woman is in intensive care at North Kansas City following the birth of her child last week.

Travis Stuteville told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum that his wife, Angela, may be suffering from complications of the H1N1 flu. She is in a medically induced coma.

"It struck fast -- it grabbed her and pulled her down with no warning," Stuteville said.

Doctors have not confirmed it is H1N1. They are waiting on test results.

Stuteville said his wife became sick just days before her scheduled birth.

"Thursday, her fever was worse --I took her temperature and she had a 103.2 temp. Our concern was for that little baby inside," Stuteville said.

On Friday, the couple's son, Jaxson, was born, and mother and child were separated. Jaxson spent a week in isolation as a precaution.

"Mom never got to hold him -- rough thing for a mom," Stuteville said.

Stuteville said his wife's condition got worse. On Sunday, she went on a ventilator to help her breathe.

Stuteville said some of the medical staff told him they suspect it's the H1N1 virus.

"With her condition -- she went downhill real fast," Stuteville said.

Test results will take about five days.

Jaxson is doing fine and went home Thursday.
