Yavapai County sees first swine flu fatality

Yavapai County has its first death tied to the H1N1 swine flu virus.
Yavapai County Community Health Services reported in a press release late Monday afternoon that a middle-aged man with the virus died Sunday.
County Health Officer Robert Resendes would not give any further information on the man because of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy laws.
"Anytime we can narrow it down to like under 1,000 people, it's too narrow," he said.
The man had several underlying health conditions, according to the press release.
Resendes said that as of this past Wednesday, the state had 1,684 cases. Out of those, healthcare professionals diagnosed 182 people with the virus this past week.
The county had 15 cases with two new cases this past week, according to Resendes.
"We've been looking at about a 2 percent death rate for those that are confirmed lab results," he said.
Excluding this death, Resendes said all of the other cases are people 24 or younger and are dealing with things such as respiratory illnesses or asthma.
"What we are seeing with everyone one of these cases, and I'm not just talking fatalities, but the ones that test positive, they all have underlying conditions," he said.
Washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer, covering your mouth with your arm while coughing and staying home with flu-like symptoms are some simple steps to prevent flu outbreaks.
Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people reported diarrhea and vomiting too, according to the press release.
