Flour Bluff Student Dies From H1N1 Virus
    Updated: Sep 29, 2009 07:25 PM EDT

FLOUR BLUFF - A 12-year-old Flour Bluff girl lapsed into a coma and died Tuesday from the H1N1 virus (swine flu).

There was emotions of sadness and grief in the Flour Bluff School District for the 12-year-old girl who died from complications of the swine flu.

School officials are not telling KRIS 6 News the girl's name, but said she was in the sixth grade at Flour Bluff Intermediate School.

The little girl played in a soccer game on Thursday, but when she came home she felt sick.

On Friday, she didn't go to school, and by Saturday, the 12-year-old girl went to Driscoll Children's Hospital. Doctors said the swine flu virus caused brain swelling, which in turn left the little girl brain dead. She passed away Tuesday.

Health officials do not know how the girl got the virus, but they said she was healthy before.

In addition, there are probably some worried parents out there, but during an early evening news conference, district officials said they are doing all they can to keep children safe, which includes extra deep cleaning and cutting down the number of kids in the cafeteria at the same time.

However, the superintendent said it's also important that parents help in the fight against swine flu.

The school also individually called parents of students in the girl's classes just to let them know what was going on. They said the parents' responses were of overwhelming support and sadness for the girl who passed away.

The death of the Flour Bluff student is the second swine flu death to be reported in Texas.

A 14-year-old Fort Worth girl died Sunday after going home from school with the flu last Wednesday.

The girl, Chloe Lindsey, came home from her middle school Wednesday and said she wasn't feeling well. She tested positive for the flu during a visit to the doctor on Friday.

On Sunday, she stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors said the fluid in her lungs was so thick that it was pressing on her heart. Doctors performed CPR but couldn't save her.

Also, in Huntsville, swine flu fears have prompted the Huntsville ISD to close all eight of its campuses until Thursday.

The district said it had to cancel classes because too many students have been sick with flu symptoms. Nearly 900 students were absent Monday.

District officials said they will sanitize all their schools before classes resume Thursday.

Girl dies of swine flu after brain swelling

CORPUS CHRISTI ? A 12-year-old Flour Bluff student died of swine flu Tuesday after her brain swelled because of the virus, Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District officials reported.

The girl, whose name isn?t being released by authorities, is the first child to die of swine flu in Nueces County. Her death is the fifth in the county related to the H1N1 virus.

The Flour Bluff Intermediate School she attended and others in the district were being thoroughly cleaned Tuesday and will remain open, officials said.

The sixth-grader was admitted Saturday to Driscoll Children?s Hospital. She played soccer Thursday and didn?t feel well that night, Nueces County health authority Dr. William Burgin said.

The girl stayed home from school Friday and was in the hospital?s intensive care unit during the weekend, he said.

At the hospital Saturday, doctors performed a brain scan on the girl and results were normal, he said. But within hours, the girl developed brain swelling and was placed on a ventilator. Hospital doctors pronounced her brain-dead Monday and she died Tuesday, Burgin said.

Burgin said the girl had no pre-existing health conditions, and it?s unclear how she contracted the virus.

The girl?s parents have requested an autopsy and the results are expected to be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for review, Burgin said. The autopsy will be completed in Nueces County, he said.

Flour Bluff Independent School District officials said they were notified by health officials Monday about the possibility of a student with swine flu. The district passed that information to parents on its Web site Tuesday morning and shortly after were notified of the girl?s death.

?We have lost a member of our Flour Bluff family and we have a message of concern for all other families,? Superintendent Julie Carbajal said. ?We continue to urge parents to keep their kids home if they are ill.?

Carbajal said the school, which has 780 students, will have 10 grief counselors available starting Wednesday.

Principal Sal Alvarado said he and other administrators on the campus called the parents of all the students in the girl?s classes to inform them of her death.

?All of them expressed sympathy and concern and they were all supportive,? Alvarado said.

Carbajal said the girl?s family has asked the district for privacy, however when appropriate the school would have a memorial in her honor.

Dr. Jaime Fergie, director of infectious diseases at Driscoll Children?s Hospital, said children rarely die from the virus.

?Unfortunately, there is this completely rare situation,? said Fergie, who was one of at least eight doctors to treat the girl.

More than 99 percent of children who get the H1N1 virus will have flu-like symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat and coughing, and likely will recover in three to five days.

Before the 12-year-old?s case, Fergie said he never had seen brain inflammation in a flu patient, although it is possible even with seasonal flu.

Fewer than five children were hospitalized Tuesday at Driscoll for H1N1, Fergie said.

Burgin advised the public to stay home if sick and wash hands frequently to prevent the spread of the flu.

At Flour Bluff schools, officials said maintenance staff has worked diligently throughout the school year to sanitize all objects students touch. Annette Rodriguez, acting director of the health district, said the school district had been taking proper precautions in cleaning.

The school redoubled those efforts Tuesday, district officials said. In addition to cleaning table tops and desktops, custodians also sanitized the legs of the furniture. They also wiped down school bus seats, lockers and other areas frequently touched by students.

The district also already had taken precautions dividing the lunch period so fewer students are in the cafeteria at a time to limit contact between students.

Carbajal said the district, which has not noticed any drops in attendance, continues to ask that students and staff stay home if they feel ill.

?You never expect this,? school district spokeswoman Lynn Kaylor said. ?You never anticipate the death of a child after all the precautions you take. Our community is close-knit and the family is definitely in our mind because they are part of our family.?

I thought the deaths in Texas were closer to 30+? Are they trying to not start a panic by lying? Or is this just an accidental typo? Or am I incorrect and there are only 2 deaths attributed to swine flu in Texas?

Swine Flu Victim's Death Brings Community Support

FLOUR BLUFF - People with the Flour Bluff Intermediate School PTA said there's been an outpouring of support from the community for the family of 12-year-old Krista Mahan, the girl who died Tuesday from the swine flu.

The PTA has spearheaded a drive to help Krista's family pay for her funeral costs and one donation made Thursday had special meaning for one woman.

Marie Koubek is a nurse who worked with Krista's mother, Paula, for years and about two years ago, Paula left.

"We kept in contact no matter where she went. We would always keep in contact and Krista would always draw me little pictures and stuff like that," Marie said.

Now, some pictures are what will keep Marie in touch with Krista.

"She was so full of life and every time she saw me she would run to me and tell me hello. She would give me the biggest hug and the biggest kiss. She was a sweet little girl, always smiling," Marie said.

While at work Thursday, Marie learned about the sad news that Krista had died suddenly from the swine flu.

"[It caught me] totally by surprise. I just couldn't believe it. I'm still devastated. I still can't believe it," Marie said.

Marie has been in close contact with the Mahan's.

"They are just all devastated. The family is all coming down from California and different parts from where they live and they are just very devastated. They are having a really hard time with this," Marie stated.

The PTA at Flour Bluff Intermediate has set up a fund to help with funeral costs. They've also been visiting different businesses that want to help out, which is what brought them to Employment Express where Marie works.

Other than businesses, Krista's classmates and teachers have tried to donate to fund for her funeral. The outpouring of support is a testament to the impact Krista had on people.

"I know I'll never forget her, and I don't think she will be forgotten," Marie said.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Krista. Visitation is set for Saturday from 6-9 p.m. at Cage Mills Funeral Home on Everhart. The rosary is at 7 p.m. also at Cage Mills

The funeral mass will be held on Saturday morning at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Krista will be laid to rest Monday afternoon at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
