    Posted: 10:30 am EDT October 9, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus Public Health officials have confirmed the first pediatric death from H1N1 swine flu, a 14-year-old boy who died Thursday night at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

The boy lived in Columbus, according to CPH spokesman Jose Rodriguez, but his name had not been released Friday morning.

"This tragedy reinforces that the H1N1 virus is in our community, and poses a risk to us all, especially children, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions," Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long said, urging residents to get H1N1 flu vaccines when they are available.

This is the second death from H1N1 flu in Franklin County. The first was Kelsey Young, 20, who died Sept. 3, one week after giving birth.

The first doses of H1N1 nasal vaccine, which cannot be given to children under the age of two or pregnant women, are expected to arrive starting Friday and injectable vaccines are expected to arrive next week.

The vaccines will initially be targeted to high risk groups and their close contacts, including pregnant women; caregivers of children less than 6-months-old; healthcare and EMS workers; and, children 6 months to 4 years-old, Rodriguez said.

"As a parent, my heart goes out to this child's family," said Dr. Teresa Long, Columbus Public Health Commissioner in a statement. "As a physician, this tragedy reinforces that the H1N1 virus is in our community, and poses a risk to us all, especially children, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions. We urge parents and all residents -- to get an H1N1 vaccine when they are available and to take every day steps to protect themselves, their loved ones and the entire community."

A limited supply of H1N1 nasal vaccine, which cannot be given to children or pregnant women, is expected to arrive in the next few days. H1N1 injectable vaccines are expected to follow and arrive by mid-October.

The boy is the second central Ohioan to die after developing H1N1. There have been at least four reported deaths in Ohio from the H1N1 virus.

Shipments of the nasal vaccine arrived in Ohio on Thursday and were expected to be distributed to health departments across the state. The nasal form of the vaccine cannot be given to pregnant women or children under the age of 2, health officials said.

Injectable vaccines are expected to arrive later this month.

Flu Victim Remembered As Kind, Passionate
        Sunday, October 11, 2009 9:46 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A 14-year-old boy who died from complications of H1N1 influenza is being remembered as kind, helpful and passionate about a sport he loved.

Steve Hammonds, an employee at Holiday Lanes bowling alley, said Jon Fowler had been coming to the counter for years, picking up his size five shoes with a bright smile.

"Sweet kid, real polite," Hammonds said. "Always please and thank you."

Fowler, who bowled each Saturday in a league at Holiday Lanes, died Thursday at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He is central Ohio's second casualty of H1N1.

While the league convened to bowl on Saturday, many reflected on the eighth grader who was no longer with them.

"A lot of the kids knew him and enjoyed him," said league coach Shawn Roberts. "I enjoyed being around him, too. He loved to bowl. It was nice, you know, to listen to him."

Roberts said he did not know that Fowler contracted H1N1, so the boy's death came as a shock. Still, no one in the league or at the bowling alley was worried about the virus. They chose instead to focus on Fowler's family.

"What we did today (was) a raffle for him and his parents," Hammonds said. "We gave him a bowling pin, a brand new one to put in the casket with him because he loved bowling so well."

Hammonds gave the pin to Fowler's mother.

"I tried not to say a whole lot," Hammonds said, "so I wouldn't cry."

Fowler's funeral is Tuesday, and his family will hold visitation Monday afternoon and evening.
