Student Dies from Complications of Flu-Like Illness

We have confirmed that a student at Woodbrook Elementary School in Albemarle County died Saturday with complications from a flu-like illness.

Doctor Lillian Peake with the Thomas Jefferson Health District says the child had an underlying health condition and the cause of death is still undetermined. Children and young adults are considered to be at higher risk for H1N1 or swine flu.

Last Thursday more than 15 percent of the kids at the Woodbrook were out sick. An Albemarle county school crisis team will be at the school Monday to help students deal with the death.

Health district officials want to remind parents that there are clusters of flu outbreaks in a number of schools in central Virginia. They say there is no need for parents to be overly concerned and there is no talk of closing schools.

A 9-year-old Albemarle County boy who had been diagnosed with a flu-like illness died Saturday at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Carson Raymond, a third-grader at Woodbrook Elementary School, had an underlying heart condition, his parents said Sunday. It was not known over the weekend if he had the novel influenza A H1N1 strain, also known as swine flu.

?Carson was just a very unlucky boy that this happened to,? said Jennifer Raymond, the boy?s mother.

While it was not clear if Carson?s death was tied to H1N1, the number of deaths among young people diagnosed as having swine flu has increased in recent weeks.

Nineteen children and teenagers died across the country last week from the illness, bringing to 76 the total number of fatalities of those under 18 years old since the flu pandemic began last spring. Most of the young people who have died from the flu had an underlying medical condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many schools in the Charlottesville region and elsewhere have reported elevated levels of student absences, primarily due to the flu. As of Friday, roughly one out of every five students at Woodbrook Elementary was out sick.

Albemarle County schools spokeswoman Maury Brown said that counselors will be at Woodbrook today to help students, teachers and others cope with the grief of losing Carson.

?We will have our crisis team with additional support and counselors at the school,? Brown said.

The school system notified parents and teachers that a member of the Woodbrook community had passed away, but provided few details. Brown said an announcement about Carson is planned to go out today.

Dr. Lilian Peake, director of the Thomas Jefferson Health District, said she could not comment on the boy?s case but did confirm that a child diagnosed with flu-like symptoms had died.

The health district reported on Sept. 30 that the Charlottesville region saw its first fatality associated with H1N1. An unidentified man with an underlying medical condition died at UVa hospital, marking the state?s sixth death tied to the flu strain.

Peake noted that the vast majority of people with flu-like illness do not need to see a physician or undergo hospitalization.

The health district received word Friday that it would receive 1,500 doses of the new H1N1 flu vaccine this week, up from 400 doses last week. Voluntary vaccinations in Albemarle County schools are expected to begin Oct. 19.

Carson?s parents said they hope their son?s death will not cause a panic. The cause of death, they said, has not yet been determined.

Carson?s father, John Raymond, said the boy turned 9 last week. He loved Pokemon and reading Harry Potter books and playing football with his two younger brothers.

?He was a super sweet, super smart little boy,? John Raymond said.
A Friday night prayer vigil for Carson at UVa hospital drew some 350 people, his parents said.

?We?ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support,? Jennifer Raymond said. ?[We?ve been] buoyed by it.?

Parents of Woodbrook Elementary students were alerted that a child had died from complications in the hospital. The child is Carson Raymond, a 9-year old in the third grade.

Carson had begun feeling sick a week ago and was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. He lost his battle with the flu yesterday at UVa Medical Center.

However, Carson had a pre-existing condition that made him susceptible to the flu. He was hospitalized more than two years ago from Influenza B, the most common flu strand.

The doctors at UVa worked tirelessly to try and save Carson, his family says.

The young boy loved baseball and had a great sense of humor. Carson's blood work will be sent to Boston Children's Hospital with the hope that doctors can find out more about the condition that made Carson so vulnerable to the virus.

A third grade boy at Woodbrook Elementary School in Albemarle County has died and the swine flu may be to blame.

The family of the 9-year-old says he died Saturday after a brief bout with the virus. He became sick in the middle of last week with swine flu-like symtoms. The child had other medical complications and was especially vulnerable to the flu.

The boy's family credited the University of Virginia Medical Center staff with a valiant effort to save his life.

Woodbrook parents are being notified by telephone that they should prepare their children for a difficult school day on Monday and counselors and other experts will be available to answer questions and help the kids.

Woodbrook was hit hard by the flu nearly a week ago and parents had been asked to volunteer to help out in the school office because so many students and staffers were ill.

On Friday, a letter went home to all Albemarle parents, telling them of the school system's plan to offer free swine flu vaccinations but those shots won't be available for at least another week.

One other person in the Thomas Jefferson Health District died from the swine flu, an adult male. No hometown for that victim was ever publicly released.

Woodbrook has about 320 students and is located east of Route 29 in northern Albemarle County.

Woodbrook Flu Clinic Moved Up

A flu clinic for an Albemarle County elementary school has been moved up. The clinic for Woodbrook Elementary will now be held on October 19.

It was originally scheduled for the October 27. With flu symptoms moving quickly through the school, the division asked the health department if the clinic at Woodbrook could happen sooner rather than later.

Albemarle County Assistant Superintendent Dr. Bruce Benson said, ?We felt that given that with the number of absenteeism at Woodbrook that it would be in the best interest of the community to move them up if possible."

Last week more than 15-percent of kids at Woodbrook were out sick. Over the weekend Carson Raymond, a third grader with an underlying heart condition, died from complications of a flu-like illness.

The vaccinations are voluntary.

That's so sad, and 'flu-like' illness at that, when everyone knows H1N1 is 99% of all 'flu-like' illnesses at this time...why doesn't someone/some group press the CDC and all state health authorities and international bodies to Prioritize the provisioning of realtime information on ILI stats and if and when any person succumbs to ILI, or dies suddenly and unexpectedly, or dies with no symptoms whatsoever (I believe that CDC was saying last week that upwards of 17% of confirmed deaths showed No symptoms at all)...so that scientists, public health officials, and medical professionals around the world have realtime data available. If some cases of deaths are not being sampled and further tested for H1N1, and their deaths are simply put down to oedema of the lungs or pulmonary pneumonia or other diseases, then will we ever get a real picture of the dynamics underway? The number of times in the past months I've read of 'flu-like' illnesses and never seen the person 'confirmed' as H1N1 would surely make anyone feels we're being **** out like sheets to twist in the wind. And one last thing, PathFinder, I appreciate all you're doing and have done for us all, but would you please comment on why we learn each week of 3-500 deaths but only see less than 10% of deaths REPORTED in the MSM?
