3 more deaths from H1N1 in a week
DENVER - In less than a week, three more people in Colorado have died from the H1N1 swine flu virus.
On Monday, 37-year-old Patrick Richard Montoya died at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver. The hospital says the father of five died from the flu and its complications.
Two more deaths were reported in Pueblo County. The two victims, 37-year-old Ronald Berumen and 21-year-old Jacqueline Romero, each had underlying health conditions, according to authorities. Berumen suffered from a seizure disorder while Romero was diabetic.
Berumen died in the emergency room of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, while Romero passed away at home.
The state health department says 256 people had been diagnosed with swine flu in Colorado through Oct. 3, according to the most recent statistics available. That includes 52 new cases of swine flu for the week ending Oct. 3.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced earlier Tuesday that nearly half of all hospitalizations of adults for swine flu in this country involved otherwise healthy adults, who didn't have asthma or other underlying medical conditions.
A vaccine for the H1N1 flu is already being distributed to health workers in Colorado. Tuesday, the sprays were handed out to employees at University Hospital in Aurora.
The hospital says it is prioritizing and giving vaccinations to those who come into close contact with the public first.
Workers in the emergency room were among those given the shot or mist.
The employees are not required to have the vaccination which will be available to all employees all week.
