  • Idaho: 4 suspect deaths this week raise Idaho officials concerns

NBC Newschannel 6 has learned that besides the two confirmed deaths at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and the possible H1N1 death of a teenage boy from Hillcrest High School - another man died at EIRMC from the H1N1 flu virus out of Bingham County.

The Eastern Idaho Public Health District says that's a total of four deaths possibly linked to the H1N1 flu virus over the past week.
While the H1N1 flu virus isn't any worse than the seasonal flu - it will extend the seasonal flu season that begins in February by more than three months and that could add to the death toll.

The H1N1 virus is extremely dangerous to the high risk group that includes pregnant women, children months old or younger, and those who have health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.

While the health district says for most people, the symptoms will come and go on their own...there is a warning. For those that fall into those high risk groups...the minute they start feeling the affects of flu. They need to visit their family doctor to start treatment.

Tammy Cox/Division Director: EIPHD "If they start having symptoms of influenza such as H1N1 - they need to start on anti-virals as soon as possible. So for those individules, its really important that they contact their physician and they need to start on those anti-virals within 36 hours for them to be effective in preventing the increased risk of complications of H1N1."

The Eastern Idaho Public Health District has about three thousand H1N1 flu vaccinations available for a clinic this Friday in Idaho Falls. But they warn that most of those vaccinations are the flu mist and cannot be given to those in the high risk priority groups. More H1N1 flu vaccine shots have been ordered and will be made available when they arrive at the health district later this year...possibly in November.
