DANVILLE ?The Pittsylvania-Danville Health District received a report Wednesday that the death of an adult male living within the health district was associated with this year?s H1N1 influenza, a health official said.

The man had underlying health issues that put him at higher risk, said Dr. Charles Devine, health director of the Pittsylvania-Danville Health District. This marks the first death in the district associated with H1N1, previously called swine flu.

Such a death is not unexpected, as the H1N1 influenza is circulating in the community, Devine said. The district is not releasing the name and age of the man, citing privacy concerns.

The health district received a small amount of H1N1 vaccine and is giving it to high-risk groups, Devine said. School-based vaccinations in the district should occur toward the end of next week.

The health department anticipates the vaccine will become more generally available to the public by mid-November, Devine said. When that happens, the vaccine will be available through the health department and participating vaccinators like doctor?s offices and pharmacies.

The health district will make a public announcement when the vaccine becomes generally available to the public.

At-risk groups for this year?s H1N1 influenza are: pregnant women, those ages 25 to 54 with underlying medical conditions, those who are 6 months to 24 years in age, those who care for or live with infants younger than 6 months and health care and emergency medical services personnel.
