"The patient was already seriously ill. Has been infected by avian Mexican and developed during treatment with Tamiflu resistance" to the drug, the spokesman said RIVM, Harald Wychgel.

"Resistance is a mutation, a small change in the virus that allows them to resist to Tamiflu," he added.

According to news agency ANP Netherlands, the patient died in hospital of Groningen (north) and was one of three that had been a mutation of the virus in the Netherlands.

So far, France and Norway were the only two countries that had fatal cases of patients affected by the H1N1 virus.
