New York - April, 2009 - America's nonprofits, including the "lifeline" organizations that many depend on for food, shelter, and other basic services, are strained to the breaking point, according to a survey released today by Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF). The survey of over 1,100 nonprofit leaders in markets nationwide captures the financial state and particular challenges facing these organizations.

Key findings include:
Only 12% expect to operate above break-even this year.
Just 16% anticipate being able to cover their operating expenses in both 2009 and 2010.
31% don't have enough operating cash in hand to cover more that one month of expenses, and another 31% have less than three months' worth.
52% of respondents expect the recession to have a long-term (2+ years) or permanent negative financial effect on their organizations.
93% of lifeline organizations that provide essential services anticipate an increase in demand in 2009.

Many organizations are experiencing a decline in funding even as demand increases. In 2009, 43% of respondents expect a decrease government funding; 62% expect a decrease in financial support from foundations; and 49% expect a decrease in contributions from individuals.

Decline in 2009 Foundation Giving Steeper Than Anticipated, According to New Foundation Center Survey

Foundation giving will likely decline by more than 10 percent in 2009, closer to the higher end of the 8 to 13 percent range estimated by the Foundation Center earlier this year. According to September 2009 survey findings released today in Foundations' Year-end Outlook for Giving and the Sector, foundation giving will also decline further in 2010, as previously predicted by the Center.

Isn't there any help available for groups like FluTrackers that rely 100% on donations?

We have been approached by many who want to place ads on FT and pay us a monthly fee for this. We have declined.

We feel accepting money from commerical or governmental interests could diminish our effectiveness.

We are not owned by anyone. No one tells us what to print.

Also, we do not sell anything so there is no incentive to "hype" any issue unless we are genuinely concerned about that issue.

We are a "grassroots" organization and we depend on personal donations. When we are short the necessary funds, I personally make up the difference.

The hundreds of volunteers who donate their time, computer equipment usage, and internet costs have made FT a leader in the world in participatory public health.
