Muzaffarpur: Eight children have died in a suspected outbreak of encephalitis with several admitted to hospital in Muzaffarpur district.
While three children died till yesterday, five others succumbed today at government and private hospitals, civil surgeon Dr AP Singh told reporters here.
Altogether 24 children from Kanti and Meenapur blocks, afflicted by the disease, complained of vomiting in past two days, Singh said.
Prima facie it appeared that the children died of encephalitis but the attending doctors were examining if the deaths could have been aggravated by diarrhoea as well, the civil surgeon said.
A medical team was formed to find out the reasons behind the death of children in the district.
Dozens afflicted by the disease were hospitalised in Sri Krishna Medical college and Hospital (SKMCH) and a private nursing home here, official sources said.
