LSR student latest victim of dengue
Durgesh Nandan Jha, TNN, Aug 14, 2010, 02.29am IST
NEW DELHI: A second year student of Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College is the latest person to fall victim to dengue in the city. The 19-year-old girl, who was admitted to a south Delhi hospital for two weeks, succumbed to the disease on Wednesday.
"The 19-year-old girl was admitted to our hospital two weeks ago with high fever and a low platelet count. She had tested positive for dengue. She died due to multiple organ failure," said a Moolchand Hospital official, where the LSR student was admitted. A close friend of the girl said, "She was a bright student. She wanted to become a journalist. Her death has shocked us all."
Two other patients, residents of Jamia Nagar, are suspected to have died due to the disease at Holy Family Hospital. Residents of Jamia Nagar have alleged that the incidence of dengue in their area is very high and that MCD was under-reporting cases and the number of deaths caused by the acute viral infection. "More than nine people have died in the last 10 days due to dengue here. The MCD is not reporting cases and few measures are being taken to control the spread of the disease in the area, which has the Yamuna river flowing nearby," said residents.
MCD reported 20 new cases of dengue on Friday, taking the total number of cases reported this season to 194. Health officer N K Yadav said he did not know about the death of the LSR student. "Two suspected deaths have been reported from Jamia Nagar. We are investigating allegations of higher incidents of dengue deaths and cases from the area," added Yadav.

Re: Delhi: Dengue
No beds for dengue patients, says hospital
Rhythma Kaul, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, August 17, 2010First Published: 00:10 IST(17/8/2010)
Last Updated: 00:12 IST(17/8/2010)
Residents of Jamia Nagar saw fogging machines for the first time this year on Monday even as the 300-bedded Holy Family Hospital put up boards at the emergency saying patients could not be admitted because the wards were full. On Monday, HT highlighted how Jamia Nagar, home to five lakh people, was
reporting 40 dengue cases a day, twice the number of cases reported from across the city. More than 100 people suspected to be suffering from dengue arrived at local hospitals every day.
Most of the people suffering from dengue-like symptoms in the area visit Holy Family, as it is a bigger hospital with better facilities.
The hospital's casualty ward has been getting close to 50 patients with dengue-like symptoms every day for the past two weeks, and had already added 20 extra beds last week to accommodate dengue patients.
"Even after adding extra beds in the casualty as well as other wards, we still cannot accommodate the rush. As many as 80 per cent of the suspected cases test positive for dengue every day, so we are left with no choice but to refer them to nearby hospitals after administering the first-aide," said Dr Sanjeev Kumar, a senior resident in the department of medicine in the hospital.
The hospital is referring critical cases to nearby hospitals such as Apollo, Batra, Moolchand, Bansal, etc.
Two of the most affected localities are Abul Fazal Enclave part I and II and Batla house, where every family has a member down with high fever and other dengue-like symptoms.
Some of the families even have more than one member, mostly children, recuperating from the disease.
Officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCDs) health department visited the area on Monday.
"We have pulled resources from other zones. Eight hand-operated and two vehicle-mounted fogging machines are functioning," said N.K. Yadav, medical health officer, MCD.
Yadav said only a joint initiative would help curb the outbreak in the area. "We have zero participation from residents. I drained accumulated water from old coolers and broken buckets. Fogging will help for a day or two, but for long-term benefits, residents need to participate," said Yadav.
20 new cases of dengue were confirmed on Monday, taking the total number of people affected in Delhi to 254.

215 cases and rising, Delhi in throes of severe dengue fear
Risha Chitlangia, TNN, Aug 18, 2010, 12.35am IST
NEW DELHI: Massive construction, a good monsoon and the cyclic nature of the disease have made the Capital endemic for a dengue outbreak this year. Till August 14, 215 confirmed dengue cases were reported, against just three cases last year. The number of confirmed cases in 2006 -- when a dengue outbreak was declared in the Capital -- was just 19 till August 14. If private hospitals are to be believed, the situation is worse as nearly 25% of their total OPD patients are showing dengue-like symptoms...

Ahead of CWG, dengue claims 4 lives in Delhi
Tavleen Singh
New Delhi, August 18, 2010
With slightly over six weeks left to the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and Delhi already facing the embarrassment of not meeting deadlines for the completion of most of the projects, the city is now facing the threat of dengue. The mosquito-spread disease has so far claimed four lives.
Massive construction activities, dug up roads and heavy rains have made the capital an ideal target for Aedes mosquitoes. According to Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), four people have died of dengue in the city.
The situation is alarming and threatening to go out of control as 20 more people tested positive on Tuesday taking the total number of affected people to 277.
Jamia Nagar and Okhla, home to more than 5 lakh people, are the worst hit areas. These densely populated localities do not have a proper drainage system and are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Residents of these areas claimed over 2,000 people have been affected by dengue and the authorities are trying to hide the real figures due to the upcoming Games.
Hospitals finding it difficult to handle:
Massive construction activities, dug up roads and heavy rains have made the capital an ideal target for DengueAs the number of people contracting this deadly disease rises, hospitals are finding themselves unable to cope with the surge of dengue cases. Holy Family Hospital in Jamia Nagar is facing an acute shortage of beds and has even put up a board saying that it cannot admit any more dengue patients.
Many areas in south Delhi are affected by the disease. These include Batla House, Okhla, Vasant Kunj, Lajpat Nagar, Ansari Nagar, South Extension, Masjid Moth. East and north Delhi are also suffering where areas like Shahdara,Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Mukherjee Nagar and Jahangirpuri have been affected.
Authorities concerned:
The Delhi administration is working overtime to keep the deadly disease at bay. City's main civic agencies - MCD and New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) - have admitted that several CWG venues, including the Games Village, are breeding grounds for the disease spreading mosquitoes.
But, the officials still choose to downplay the situation to avoid spreading panic. Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney said he will inspect the worst affected areas of Jamia Nagar on Wednesday along with the health department officials.
"Dengue has been confirmed as the cause in only one of the four deaths, while three other cases are suspected. There are 33 government hospitals apart from the private ones so there is no dearth of beds," Sawhney told Headlines Today.
Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia shied away from talking about the dengue death toll. She wriggled out of the whole mess by saying that the MCD was responsible for keeping track of dengue deaths.
"It is the MCD's concern to collect the data. It is not the Delhi government's concern and every time the MCD does it. But I checked the data because in the House also it was discussed and I like to take an update everyday. According to them, there are four deaths," Walia said.
Both the Delhi government and MCD officials are trying to ensure that the city is safe ahead of the Games. Efforts are being doubled to ensure that the stadia and Games Village are protected from the threat of dengue.
Satisfied by the efforts of government agencies to check the spread of dengue, CWG organising committee vice-president Randhir Singh said, "Fumigation is going on at all the stadias. When we were in Indira Gandhi stadium it was fumigated."

The civic body has also released advisory in newspapers, stating the symptoms of and preventive measures for the vector-borne disease and urging the people not to panic. The state government has launched a 12-hour special helpline -- 22307145 -- which will be operational from 8 am to 8 pm," the advertisement said.
Mosquito breeding has been detected in 44,743 houses in various parts of the city. The south zone of the civic agency has been the worst affected with 94 cases of dengue being reported so far, the MCD said.
Dengue is transmitted to humans by the aedes aegypti mosquito and its symptoms include fever, joint and bone pain, nausea, headache and fatigue.
