Man hospitalized hit by West Nile virus in Puerto Real
26/09/2010
A 60 year old man has admitted to the Hospital de Puerto Real (C?diz) affected by the West Nile virus, the first human case confirmed in Andalusia and Spain's second, according to the Ministry of Health.
The patient, born in Chiclana, was admitted with symptoms of meningitis and his condition improved, so it is expected to be discharged in the coming days.
The departments of Agriculture, Environment and Health have for years made a coordinated effort for monitoring and control of the colonies of wild birds and equine to detect and anticipate this type of situation following the detection of a case in Portugal in 2004. To date, in Spain only in 2004 had detected a case of infection by this virus in humans in a patient Cornella de Llobregat (Barcelona).
The West Nile encephalitis, caused by West Nile virus is not contagious infectious disease that is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that primarily affects migratory birds, which are the main reservoir for epidemic spread.
