ILI rates remained at low levels in all age groups during week 47 2010, with the highest rates reported from those aged 65 years or older. Two ILI cases were reported in those aged 65 years or older, corresponding to an ILI rate of 8.1 per 100,000, a slight increase from 3.5 per 100,000 in week 46 2010. There have been no ILI cases in the 0‐4 year age group since week 43 2010. ILI rates decreased in the 5‐14 year age group (from 11.6 to 3.4 per 100,000) and in the 15‐64 year age group (from 11.2 to 7.8 per 100,000) during week 47 2010.

A total of 64 specimens (12 sentinel and 52 non‐sentinel) were tested by the NVRL during week 47 2010. One sentinel specimen was positive for influenza, an influenza A (H1N1 2009) virus. All non‐sentinel specimens taken during week 47 2010 were negative for influenza (figure 3). To date this season, four specimens have tested positive for influenza virus: two A (H1N1 2009) and two A (unsubtyped). The four positive specimens were from two cases: one sentinel GP case in the 15‐64 year age group and one hospitalised case in the 0‐4 year age group.

ILI rates remained at low levels in all age groups during week 48 2010, with the highest rates reported from the 5‐14 year age group. One ILI case was reported in the 0‐4 year age group (6.6 per 100,000), three in the 5‐14 year age group (10.7 per 100,000) and 10 cases were reported in the 15‐64 year age group (6.9 per 100,000). No ILI cases were reported in those aged 65 years or older.

A total of 99 specimens (9 sentinel and 90 non‐sentinel) were tested by the NVRL during week 48 2010. No specimens were positive for influenza during this period (figure 3). To date this season, four specimens have tested positive for influenza virus: two A (H1N1 2009) and two A (unsubtyped). The four positive specimens were from two cases: one sentinel GP case in the 15‐64 year age group and one hospitalised case in the 0‐4 year age group.

Of the 90 non‐sentinel specimens tested during week 48 2010, 14.4% (13) were positive for RSV, an increase from 7.0% during week 47 2010 (Tables 1 & 2). The current proportion of RSV positive detections although increasing and higher than the 2009/2010 season, remains at low levels compared to average levels for the same period over the last 10 years. Figure 4 shows the number and percentage of non‐sentinel RSV positive specimens detected by the NVRL during the 2010/2011 and 2009/2010 seasons.? To date this season, there have been sporadic detections of adenovirus and parainfluenza virus (PIV) types ‐1, ‐2 and ‐3.

two outbreaks being reported. The positivity rate of sentinel specimens for influenza was 83.3%, with 5 of 6 specimens testing positive.? The sentinel GP ILI consultation rate was 14.4 per 100,000 population in week 49 2010, more than double the updated rate of 6.4 per 100,000 reported during week 48 2010.

ILI rates increased in the 5‐14, 15‐64 and 65+ year age groups during week 49 2010, although rates remain at relatively low levels. Four ILI cases were reported in the 5‐14 year age group (12.1 per 100,000), 29 cases were reported in the 15‐64 year age group (16.9 per 100,000) and 3 ILI cases in those aged 65 years or older (10.9 per 100,000). No ILI cases were reported in those aged 0‐4 years.

A total of 106 specimens (6 sentinel and 100 non‐sentinel) were tested by the NVRL during week 49 2010. Nine (8.5%) specimens were positive for influenza: eight influenza A (H1N1 2009) and one influenza B. Of the six sentinel specimens taken during week 49 2010, five (83.3%) were positive for influenza: 4 influenza A (H1N1 2009) and one influenza B. Of the 100 non‐sentinel specimens taken during week 49 2010, four (4.0%) were positive for influenza: all four were influenza A (H1N1 2009).
To date this season, 846 sentinel and non‐sentinel specimens were tested by the NVRL, 14 (1.7%) specimens tested positive for influenza: 11 influenza A (H1N1 2009), two influenza A (unsubtyped) and one influenza B.
Of the 11 influenza A (H1N1 2009) specimens detected, six were sentinel specimens and five were from nonsentinel sources (figures 3 & 4).

Five ILI cases were reported in the 0‐4 year age group (37.5 per 100,000), five cases were reported in the 5‐14 year age group (20.2 per 100,000), 34 in the 15‐64 year age group (26.5 per 100,000) and one ILI case in those aged 65 years or older (4.8 per 100,000).

A total of 179 specimens (24 sentinel and 155 non‐sentinel) were tested by the NVRL during week 50 2010. Thirty‐three (18.4%) specimens were positive for influenza: 30 influenza A (H1N1 2009), one influenza A (H3), one influenza A (unsubtyped) and one influenza B. Of the 24 sentinel specimens taken during week 50 2010, seven (29.2%) were positive for influenza: five influenza A (H1N1 2009), one A (H3) and one influenza B. Of the 155 non‐sentinel specimens taken during week 50 2010, 26 (16.8%) were positive for influenza: 25 influenza A (H1N1 2009) and one influenza A (unsubtyped).
To date this season, 1038 sentinel and non‐sentinel specimens were tested by the NVRL, 51 (4.9%) specimens tested positive for influenza: 45 influenza A (H1N1 2009), one influenza A (H3), three influenza A (unsubtyped) and two influenza B. Of the 45 influenza A (H1N1 2009) specimens detected, 14 were sentinel specimens and 31 were from non‐sentinel sources (figures 3 & 4).

5. Influenza notifications (CIDR)
As of 30th December 2010 (14:56), 120 confirmed influenza cases were notified on CIDR for the 2010/2011 influenza season; 106/120 (88.3%) were confirmed influenza A (H1N1 2009), one (0.8%) was influenza A (H3) and 13 (10.8%) influenza B cases. It should be noted that data for week 52 2010 are incomplete and only include notified cases as of 30th December 2010 (14:56).
Thirty‐six (30.0%) of the 120 confirmed influenza cases notified were hospitalised (i.e. hospital inpatient status), 34 of whom were confirmed influenza A (H1N1 2009) cases and two were influenza B cases. Fourteen (11.7%) of the 120 confirmed influenza cases were hospital outpatients, five (4.2%) cases were A&E patients, 39 (32.5%) were GP patients and hospital status was unknown for 26 (21.7%) cases (figure 8). Nineteen (15.8%) of the 120 cases were reported as either pregnant or postnatal related cases. Eighteen were confirmed influenza A (H1N1 2009) cases and one influenza B case. Eight cases were reported as hospitalised, 7 influenza A (H1N1 2009) and one influenza B.
Of the 120 notified confirmed cases, nine cases were in the 0‐4 year age group, 10 cases were aged 5‐14 years, 95 were in the 15‐64 year age group, four cases were aged 65 years or older and age was unknown for two cases.

A total of 539 specimens (all of which were non‐sentinel specimens) were tested by the NVRL during week 52 2010. Two hundred and fifty‐nine (48.1%) specimens were positive for influenza: 214 influenza A (H1N1 2009), two influenza A (H3), 13 influenza A (unsubtyped) and 30 influenza B.
To date this season, 1940 sentinel and non‐sentinel specimens were tested by the NVRL, 471 (24.3%) specimens tested positive for influenza: 389 influenza A (H1N1 2009), three influenza A (H3), 26 influenza A (unsubtyped) and 53 influenza B. Of the 471 positive influenza specimens, 418 (88.7%) were influenza A and 53 (11.3%) were influenza B. Of the 389 influenza A (H1N1 2009) specimens detected, 34 were sentinel specimens and 355 were from non‐sentinel sources (figures 3 & 4).

As of 5th January 2011 (18:50), HPSC has been notified of 33 hospitalised patients admitted to critical care units with confirmed influenza A (H1N1 2009) during the 2010/2011 influenza season. Three of these cases were paediatric cases. Seven (21.2%) of the 33 cases have been discharged from ICU. Enhanced data are currently available on 22 cases, 14 (63.6%) of whom had underlying medical conditions.
