Ukrainian Health Ministry is not worried about the new flu
"Gazeta po - Kiev, 10.11.2010 Yesterday all ministries of health of the world have received through the paging system of the World Health Organization information on registration in the United States a new strain of swine flu virus.

WHO has identified the two Americans virus H3N2: one of them - the seven-month child (Illinois), and the second - a man of forty-six years old from Pennsylvania.

According to the chief sanvracha Russia Gennady Onishchenko, the new influenza virus is a triple-reassortant, ie it consists of just three known previously functioning, the virus:

      - H3N2 has always been a seasonal influenza strain, like H1N1. Another thing is that in two cases of Americans examined this strain and isolated, it is the same H3N2, but mutated, reasortantny consisting of the three strains.

It turns out that the genetic structure of H3N2 is different from the "precursor" and it's hard to say how he will behave. Earlier, doctors said that the swine flu has not undergone any major mutations.

The Health Ministry of Ukraine reacted to information about the new mutant strain of calm.

      - This strain is predicted this year. Special means to deal with it as normal seasonal influenza, is not provided. Under the H1N1 virus they identified as an exception, - the press service of the Ministry of Health.

In the Ukrainian Center for Influenza assured that they are ready for any virus and tools to deal with him plenty, but still too early to worry.

From MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/wk/mm5944.pdf

(???) CDC discontinued reporting of individual confirmed and probable cases of 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infections on July 24, 2009. During 2009, four cases of human infection with novel influenza A viruses, different from the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) strain, were reported to CDC.

The two cases of novel influenza A virus infection reported to CDC during 2010 were identified as swine influenza A (H3N2) virus and are unrelated to the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus.
Total case counts for 2009 were provided by the Influenza Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

I think I agree with ironorehopper - this seems to be the report of the swine H3N2 infections, not a seasonal flu virus, especially in light of the mention of "Pennsylvania" in the Russian articles, which is where the above table puts the new infection.

Hopefully these are just pig-to-human infections that do not lead to further spread.

More information on the makeup of this H3N2 (and whether the cases in Illinois and Pennsylvania match - the Russian articles seem to imply they do) would be helpful.

The link below is the week 23 MMWR, for week ending June 18, 2010, and already contains the first novel influenza detection (and the week 22 one does not), but does not indicate where it occurred (presumably Illinois) and does not list it as current week.

Ironorehopper's week 44 MMWR above is the first report with the second detection. IMO, the five months gap makes the ongoing person-to-person spread of this virus unlikely; we would have had more than two detections by now.

I think you are both right, but in the report above, Onishchenko remarks they are notified via a "paging" system of the WHO - If it is true, why would the MMWR information be "paged?"

posted above: "We have received a message through the paging system of the World Health Organization that the United States for two people the virus H3N2," - said the head of Rospotrebnadzor, the chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko.

The IHR regulations below state that the detection of a novel strain of influenza is one of four diseases (SARS, smallpox, and polio being the other three) that require immediate notification of the WHO.

The US CDC likely filed such a notification.

The bold text might give us some kind of indication of the makeup of this virus.

I think the Russian media is circulating the same story over and over in this news cycle.

I would like to see the text of the information about this event that Gennady Onishchenko is referring to.
