Re: Haiti - Ministry of Health - Cholera update november 19
Haiti - Epidemic : The mortality rate may be multiplied by 4
19/11/2010 09:19:51
For a week, Haiti is the theater of scenes of violence in the Haitian population. WHO is currently receiving reports of cholera victims dying in the streets because they are unable to reach health facilities in time because of insecurity.
MINUSTAH (UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti) became the direct target of the riots that demanded its departure. Médecins sans frontières, which opened its first treatment center in Cap Haitien, was unable to continue the implementation of the second center in Port-au-Prince. Dr. Roses MSF confirmed on the place : "The situation of violence and insecurity now threatens to severely limit our success". WHO teams have to interrupt a large part of their work in support of the cholera treatment centers, training of health personnel and delivery of supplies to affected communities. Some members of WHO are even confined to their homes since violence erupted.
Mortality rates, in case of absence of access to care may be multiplied by 4 alert WHO. Because violence and insecurity, are currently obstacle to medical care for cholera, the provision of training and delivery of critical supplies. The World Health Organization calls on the Government of Haiti, urging him to support health professionals and rescue teams. Some members of the WHO are currently confined to their homes since violence broke out earlier this week in the North.
Every hour, where the efforts of emergency medical teams are unable to act because of demonstrations and other obstacles on the ground, equals more deaths by cholera of Haitians, summarized Dr. Mirta Roses, PAHO Director. "We understand the frustration of many Haitians because of the tragic situation that has developed, but emergency medical personnel is equally important to save lives as the rescue teams were after the earthquake".

Re: Haiti - Ministry of Health - Cholera update november 26
Via Crofsblog:
Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : Last assessment, in Port-au-Prince, the epidemic stopped by politics !
- snip -
Already yesterday, we had questioned the validity of the mortality figures published by the Ministry , which indicated an increase in deaths abnormally low +0.4%, whereas in the previous 48 hours (November 21 and 22) the death rate average was +23.68% per day. Knowing that health personnel in the ground, informs us that the area of Port-au-Prince represents nearly 50% of cholera cases, the only explanation to this brutal and instantaneous stop of the epidemic, must find its answer in political reasons and not in treatment efficacy (unfortunately).
Crofs comment:
- snip -
We see a sharp jump in hospitalizations and deaths on November 20, then a drop in hospitalizations and deaths the next day. That makes no sense.
Then hospitalizations and deaths both jump on the 22nd, rise a bit more on the 23rd, and then stop on the 24th. Apart from these updated numbers, the Ministry has offered no interpretation or analysis.
I hate playing amateur epidemiologist. Very likely I've misread the tables. But until someone explains what's going on in the ministry's reports, I'm going to strongly suspect everything it's been telling us since it began publishing cholera stats.
And since PAHO and other agencies are basing their appeals on Ministry numbers, I'm going to have to be skeptical about their claims as well.?Addressing chronic disease is an issue of human rights ? that must be our call to arms"
