Britain's swine flu patients take up hospital beds for kids

London, Jan 3 (IANS) Seriously ill babies and children are being forced to travel to different places across Britain as intensive care beds have been allotted to swine flu patients.

Only 15 of the country's 320 intensive care beds for infants are said to have been made free, according to the Daily Express.

There have been reports that seriously ill children have been moved up to 100 miles (160 km) in ambulances from the West Midlands to Merseyside and London.

Kevin Morris, president of the Paediatric Intensive Care Society and a consultant at Birmingham Children's Hospital, said: 'It is close to not coping. There have been days when you ring around all the units, they are all full and babies and children are having to travel.'

Officials said the flu outbreak may see the National Health Service (NHS) employ up to 20,000 retired doctors.

Meanwhile, doctors are fearing the swine flu outbreak could become an epidemic as pupils return to school at the end of the Christmas break.

Warm classrooms would create a perfect breeding ground for the virus, which has killed 39 people since October 2010, including 11 teenagers.

Anger over pandemic flu cash diverted to 2014 Games

Plans to divert ?10m from the Scottish pandemic flu budget to the Commonwealth Games fund have come under fire.

Labour's health spokeswoman Jackie Baillie criticised ministers for pledging to transfer money set aside for extra vaccines and antivirals.

She said the ongoing threat of a swine flu pandemic meant it was the wrong time to take cash away from the budget.

However, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said the country still had an adequate stockpile of flu treatments.

Two people died from seasonal flu in Scotland in recent weeks, bringing the total number of deaths north of the border this winter to four.

Scottish government statistics show that of the 360 confirmed cases of influenza reported over the last 11 weeks, 237 tested positive for swine flu (H1N1).

ALMOST half of Britain?s 3,000 intensive care beds are occupied by swine flu victims.

That is the warning from experts who last night said the pandemic ? the worst in two decades ? shows no sign of easing.

If new cases continue to rise as people return to work and school, hospitals may turn operating theatres into intensive care units.

Geoff Martin, chair of medical campaigning group Health *Emergency, revealed: ?In various parts of London, and around the country, more than 50% of intensive care beds are filled with confirmed or suspected swine flu cases. It?s a huge problem.

?We run full-tilt on critical care beds, so if you take half the capacity out of the system with one particular epidemic, the availability of beds becomes severely compromised.

Swine flu tests after girl dies in Wirral

Doctors at a Wirral hospital are investigating whether a 17-year-old girl died as a result of swine flu.

Olivia Rae Clee-Barnett died in the early hours of 2 January at Arrowe Park Hospital, in Birkenhead.

The hospital recently suspended visiting to try to reduce the risk of patients and staff catching flu.

Her family said they were devastated, saying Olivia was "an extremely beautiful and talented girl" who loved drama and music.

An investigation has been launched at the hospital to determine the cause of death.

Five people have already died from swine flu on Merseyside.

Northern Ireland swine flu figures rise again

The number of swine flu cases in Northern Ireland has increased to more than 200, the Public Health Agency (PHA) has revealed.

The number of people found to have the H1N1 swine flu virus in NI in the week before Christmas had previously doubled to 129.

Dr Lorraine Doherty of the PHA said all pregnant women were to be asked to get the swine flu vaccine.

She said however that levels of flu "were not anything like" last year.

Dr Doherty said the latest figure for swine flu cases in Northern Ireland of more than 200 was for last week.

More swine flu deaths expected as young are denied vaccinations

Almost 150 people with flu are fighting for their lives in London's hospitals, with experts warning that deaths from the virus will escalate.

Intensive care units across the capital have been inundated with patients diagnosed with the illness, with the majority struck down with swine flu.

The figures come amid fears that a "children's epidemic" of the virus could be triggered as schools reopen.

Since October, flu has killed 39 people across the country, including 11 under-15s, with 738 sufferers currently in intensive care, including 143 in London. The nationwide figure is four times higher than at the peak of last year's pandemic; of those who died, 36 were suffering from swine flu (H1N1).

Parents unable to get their children vaccinated as doctors' surgeries run out of supplies have turned to pharmacies, where the jabs are administered for between ?7.50 and ?12, but several high street chains are refusing to vaccinate children, citing company guidelines. Boots will not vaccinate under-16s, while Sainsbury's and Tesco set the bar at 18.

This, coupled with nine million pupils returning to the classroom after the Christmas holidays, could see swine flu among the young spiral.

Professor Hugh Pennington, one of Britain's leading flu experts, blamed the outbreak - the worst in a decade - on a lack of action by the Government and a failure to order sufficient stocks of the vaccine by GPs.

He said: "Quite a lot of people have died who should not have. A good proportion of victims would still be here had they been vaccinated.

"GPs and midwives have been professionally incompetent. It's crazy that they haven't prepared for the flu season. It really is unacceptable that people aren't getting the vaccine for administrative reasons. It shows poor planning and insufficient awareness on their parts."

Professor John Oxford, from St Bartholomew's hospital in the City warned there will be more deaths from swine flu: "This virus, H1N1, is pretty special - it gets to the parts other flu viruses don't reach. Unfortunately I do expect there to be more fatalities."

Teachers and children suffering from flu were today urged to stay away from classes in a letter sent to London schools by the North East and North Central London Health Protection Unit.

A FIT and healthy barman has died after contracting swine flu.

John Walsh, 21, was so ill with flu by Christmas Day that his sister persuaded him to see a doctor.

He went to a walk-in clinic and was immediately admitted to hospital where doctors sedated him as his condition worsened.

John had not been suffering from any underlying health problems but he never regained consciousness.

His heartbroken sister Becky, 27, said: "He was so happy and bubbly, we can't believe he has gone.
