Sickness at Loop federal jail delays court cases

A flu outbreak at a South Loop federal jail has abruptly halted court calls for inmates with cases pending at the nearby federal courthouse, authorities said Monday.
No inmates in the Metropolitan Correctional Center have been transferred to the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse for trial or other court appearances since Thursday because of the outbreak, a spokesman at the jail said.
Only a small percentage of inmates are sick, but staff wanted to prevent further spread of the illness, authorities said. Visits at the jail have also been suspended, so attorneys cannot confer with clients.
Chief Judge James Holderman of the U.S. District Court learned Friday of the impact of the illnesses on the court system and said he hopes to return to "normal operations'' by Wednesday...
