    Cases of hand-foot-mouth disease soar

    Tuesday, 07 June 2011 10:53

More than 2,100 children in HCM City contracted hand-foot-mouth disease in the past three months, double the number in the same period last year, according to the city's Department of Health.

    [snip]

The reason for the increase was the appearance of a new virus enterovirus 71 type B2, said Giang.

      Date: Tue 7 Jun 2011
Source: Report received from the Institute Pasteur, Ho Chi Minh City,
      Viet Nam [edited]

Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) increased sharply in Ho
Chi Minh City between April and May 2011. Samples from 174 HFMD cases
were obtained from Children's Hospitals No. 1 and No. 2 in Ho Chi Minh
City (HCMC) and from several southern provinces, including Dong Thap,
Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Tien Giang provinces and were tested in the
Laboratory of Enteric Viruses of the Pasteur Institute in HCMC. Data
from RT-PCR assays showed the presence of human enterovirus 71 (HEV
      71) in 43/174 (25 percent) of cases and other enteroviruses in 91/174
(52 percent) of cases. HEV 71 was identified in 5 fatal cases of HFMD
from specimens that included CSF and throat swabs.

In 9 cases, HEV 71 was isolated in cell culture, and the sub-genotype
was identified by nucleotide sequencing. These data showed that 8
patients (including 2 fatal cases from Ho Chi Minh City) were infected
with HEV 71 sub-genotype C4, and a single HFMD case from Dong Thap
province was infected with HEV71 sub-genotype C5. According to
surveillance data obtained from the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh
City, HEV 71 C4 and C5 strains have been prevalent in southern Viet
      Nam since 2003.

[ProMED-mail welcomes receipt of this authoritative report.

It is clear that, as elsewhere, the epidemiology of HFMD in Viet Nam
is complex and that human enterovirus 71 plays a major role in the
causation of this disease. As commented previously, a great diversity
of human enterovirus 71 strains circulate globally, and no particular
genogroup has been specifically associated with severe disease.
Different human enteroviruses co-circulate in the community annually.

According to a recent review (Lee, T.C. et al., Pediatr Infect Dis J.
2009 Oct;28(10):904-10), the emergence in recent years of the human
enterovirus 71 epidemic in the Asia Pacific region has been associated
      with the circulation of 5 genetic lineages (genotypes B3, B4, C1, C2,
C4) that appear to be undergoing rapid evolutionary changes. More
recent reports indicate that sub-genotype C4 predominates in China at
the present time (Mao LX, et al., J Clin Virol. 2010 Oct;49(2):100-4),
and this, on the basis of the above report, appears to be the
situation in Viet Nam also. The identification of a B2 sub-genotype
virus in the preceding ProMED report from Viet Nam [Hand, foot & mouth
disease - Viet Nam (02): (QN, HCM) 20110604.1712] appears not to be
indicative of the current epidemiological situation in this part of
      South East Asia.

13-year-old dies from hand, foot and mouth disease
        Last updated: 6/9/2011 14:00

A 13-year-old boy died from hand, foot and mouth disease last weekend, becoming the 12th HFMD fatality in Ho Chi Minh City this year.

The boy fell sick several days prior to his death and was admitted to hospital when his conditions worsened, according to HCMC Children?s Hospital 2.

His parents thought he just caught the normal flu and it was rather late when they brought him to hospital. The boy had serious complications, which led to his death.

He is a rare case because the HFMD usually attacks children under five, doctors said.

Dong Nai reports seven dead from hand, foot and mouth disease
            Last updated: 6/8/2011 14:10

A two-year-old boy in the southern province of Dong Nai died from hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) on Tuesday, bringing the HFMD fatalities in the province to seven this year.

Nguyen Minh Vao of Long Thanh District was admitted to hospital a day earlier with high fever and respiratory disorder.

Doctor Nguyen Le Da Ha of Dong Nai Children?s Hospital said the boy contracted the HFMD two days before being taken to hospital and later had complications.

The hospital is providing treatment to around 210 HFMD patients.

Ha advised families of HFMD-infected children to bring them to the hospital quickly because youth patients can have serious complications.

Apart from Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City has so far reported 11 deaths from HFMD and Quang Ngai Province has reported three deaths.

The department added that the number was 40 percent higher than during the same period last year and most of the patients were young children.

There have been over 1,200 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease in 28 provinces and cities around the country in the last one week alone.

All the southern provinces and cities are presently facing an epidemic of the disease, which has already resulted in 24 deaths.

The northern region has recorded 14 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease without any fatalities.

Ha Noi reports more hand-foot-mouth cases
The Department of Health in Hanoi has reported 12 more cases of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in some districts, in the past two weeks.

Symptoms of hand-foot-mouth disease on a child?s hand
The disease has spread across many parts of the southern provinces within the first six months of this year with more than 8,000 reported cases and 29 reported deaths.

Hanoi health authorities and the Department of Education and Training are implementing preventive measures to curb the disease from spreading in schools, especially in pre-schools.

Relevant agencies must raise parents? awareness of the disease, warning them of the symptoms. Parents must report to schools of any sick child and keep them indoors at home for at least 10 days.

Dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease still rampant
The Ministry of Health stated on July 3 that dengue fever and hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) was still rampant in many provinces nationwide.

Nguyen Van Binh, head of the Preventive Medicine Department, said the two diseases are rapidly spreading in the southern and central provinces. Ninh Binh in the North has reported the most number of cases with over 300 patients, 60 percent of who contracted the disease through the lethal virus strain EV 71.

The month of June alone recorded more than 1,758 dengue fever cases in 30 provinces and cities with three fatalities, bringing the total toll in the country to 17,510 with 14 deaths. Despite the high figure, the number has decreased 2.9 percent.

Medical workers fret about the hand-foot-mouth disease because of 40 related deaths in the first six months of the year. Yet the department said the South and Central provinces still reported younger patients were contracting the disease.

The department blamed parents and district medical workers of low awareness of HFMD which was causing these severe outbreaks.

Five of the 2,093 cases were fatal, the center said.

So far this year, HCMC has recorded a total 4,770 cases, including 17 fatalities.

The month of May also saw 1,433 HFMD cases ? the highest monthly number this year.

The department asked all districts to raise people?s awareness of the disease and strengthen sterilization work at schools and residential areas.

The HCMC Preventive Health Center also reported that the number of dengue fever cases is also rising, with 887 cases reported in June, nearly doubling the figure in May.

Dengue fever has claimed two lives in HCMC this year.

Truong Huu Khanh, head of the above department said that the hospital admits approximately 80-90 new cases everyday, 50 percent of which are from other provinces. A similar situation prevails in Children Hospital No. 2.

According to Nguyen Dac Tho, director of HCMC Preventive Medicine Centre, in the first 6 months of 2011 there have been about 4,700 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease including 17 deaths.
