ROMA, 20 (EUROPA PRESS)
El Fondo de la ONU para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) instó hoy a Nigeria a incrementar las medidas contra la gripe aviar en granjas y mercados avícolas para prevenir la expansión de la enfermedad y reducir el riesgo de que se produzcan nuevos casos en humanos tras el estudio sobre el terreno realizado en este país.
Según explica la agencia de Naciones Unidas en un comunicado, el virus circula todavía entre la población avícola, con brotes en al menos diez estados durante los últimos meses. Además, el virus se extendió probablemente a lo largo de las principales rutas comerciales, situando a los países vecinos en una situación de riesgo a causa del movimiento clandestino de aves, por lo que, según la FAO, un aumento de la vigilancia podría detectar de forma inmediata un brote de la enfermedad.
"El primer caso confirmado de contagio humano de H5N1 en Nigeria demuestra que continúa el peligro para las personas en tareas de riesgo como el manejo de pollos muertos o enfermos, y especialmente en el sacrificio de aves de corral en casa o los mercados sin las condiciones adecuadas", subrayó el jefe veterinario de la FAO, Joseph Domenech.
Puesto que en todos los países con una incidencia similar de la enfermedad en las aves han tenido lugar casos de contagio humano, "el primer caso humano no resulta por lo tanto una sorpresa, y no significa que exista un riesgo mayor para las personas", añadió. "Sin embargo, nos recuerda la necesidad de incrementar la lucha contra el H5N1 en las aves de corral", afirmó Doménech.
La FAO apoya al Gobierno nigeriano para que se incremente la búsqueda activa de focos, poder entender mejor la extensión e incidencia de la enfermedad e identificar las áreas de riesgo, y subraya que para un plan de lucha eficaz es necesario conocer la forma en la que el virus circula.
Igualmente, la agencia de la ONU insiste en la necesidad de reducir el riesgo del contagio humano a través de medidas en los mercados tales como las inspecciones veterinarias, la mejora de la higiene y convencer a la gente para que no sacrifique los animales en casa, una práctica que es muy habitual en Nigeria y en muchos países africanos. Por otra parte, indica que los campesinos deben tomar medidas estrictas para prevenir la entrada del virus en sus granjas, incluyendo la desinfección de todos los materiales que entren en su propiedad. Además, se debe evitar el contacto entre las aves de corral y las aves silvestres, y las nuevas aves para la cría intensiva tienen que venir únicamente de lugares con garantía que están libres de la enfermedad, indica la FAO en su comunicado. Por ello "se anima a Nigeria a que considere seriamente la vacunación selectiva de las aves de corral en los casos que proceda, mediante el uso de vacunas de calidad y bajo estrictas medidas de control", afirma la agencia de la ONU.
