  • Andhra Pradesh: Survey to identify viruses to be launched

Survey to identify viruses to be launched
    M. Sai Gopal

A major survey to analyse and identify viruses that are circulating in the atmosphere and causing upper respiratory infections is being taken up by researchers from a host of government agencies in the capital. The aim is to identify the viruses and chalk out strategies to plan vaccination, investigate, evaluate, and prevent outbreaks like swine flu in future.

    Project
The project is being taken up by Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) in collaboration with National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), formerly National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD), World Health Organisation (WHO), and Centre for Disease Control and Prevalence (CDC), Atlanta, USA. The project is a part of National Surveillance of Influenza Illness, authorities said.

Researchers have identified three hospitals -- two Chest Hospitals at Erragadda and Visakhapatnam, and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati -- to collect swab samples from patients. The samples then will be sent to IPM for cell culture and identification of the type of virus. The project is likely to take off by August, officials said.

?Everybody these days talk about viral outbreaks without actually knowing what virus is causing the damage. We intend to identify these viruses, their source, study the pattern of their spread in the three regions of the State, and help prevent outbreaks like H1N1 in future,? says Director, IPM, Dr. P. Sucharitha Murthy.
