Sidrap – Bird flu H5N1 outbreaks in Sidrap municipality, South Sulawesi, and killed at least ten thousands chickens. The disease has spread to nearly entire farming area in Sidrap.

The outbreak has possibly spread in Desa (village) Wanio, Kecamatan Panca Lautang, Desa Lanrang and Bulo, and Desa Tanete. Desa Tanete is the largest of layer chicken farms center in Sidrap. The outbreak was first noticed in Desa Wanio, before then it spread to other area.

The Head of Livestock Service of Sidrap, Muhammad Azis said they dispatched a team for monitoring as they received disease report from people. Test to the dead chickens showed positive bird flu H5N1.

Azis mentioned the outbreak mostly hit native/backyard chickens and rarely found in commercial chickens. Officials had taken control measures by disinfection of susceptible chicken farms in Sidrap.

There are about 3.4 millions layers and 2 millions broiler chickens need be rescued in Sidrap, said Azis.
