It seems that Jamshedpur city is in the grip of an unidentified virus,
as it has sent scores of people to hospitals with high fever in the
past 3 weeks. According to sources, about 30 000 people have been
diagnosed with this fever and the number is increasing every day
. All
hospitals and nursing homes have been inundated with patients, while
doctors have been working overtime to bring the situation under
control.

District health officials have been running from one hospital to
another, overseeing diagnostic arrangements and advising authorities
about ways and means to increase accommodation. "The beds are full. In
some hospitals there's no space in the corridors also," said a
district health official. On an average, 500 patients are visiting the
OPD [out patient department] daily. "We have been advising patients to
take rest at home. Only those patients who need urgent attention are
being admitted," said S S Prasad, superintendent, MGM hospital.

[There is very little information available in this report, other than
a very substantial number of febrile cases. A large number of
etiological agents could be responsible, but without additional
information about symptoms in addition to laboratory and other
diagnostic findings, it is not possible to hazard a guess as to what
pathogen might be involved. ProMED would appreciate receiving
additional information as it becomes available.

The article above has been edited; the original continues (suggesting one death in 30,000 cases?):

[such]

Such was the rush at the government railway hospital, that private doctors had to be summoned. "Despite the problems (shortage of doctors and beds) there's been no casualty," said district surveillance officer, Swaran Singh. He was replying to a query pertaining to the first "suspected" death due to viral fever in the city. Saraswati Kumari, a girl who resides in Moon City, Mango, died on Wednesday after three days of viral fever.

Special medical teams to tackle viral fever, dengue
TNN Jul 20, 2011, 12.39am ISTJAMSHEDPUR: The health department convened a meeting with officials on Tuesday to look into measures to check the rising cases of viral fever here. An isolated case of dengue was also reported from the district a couple of days back.

The meeting resolved to constitute multiple health teams that will visit vulnerable areas to oversee preventive measures and also launch awareness campaigns involving all the three notified area committees.

The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC), Mango Notified Area Committee, (MNAC) and Jugsalai Notified Area Committee, (JNAC) have been asked to intensify sanitation work.

The officials of the three notified area committees have been asked to intensify cleaning drives in their respective areas and seek the help of self-help groups and NGOs," said Swaran Singh, district nodal officer.

Hardayal Singh, a resident of Agrico, was identified as the first patient to suffer from dengue in the city. He has, however, recovered fully. Along with viral fever, malaria cases are also on the rise. The focus of the health department is largely the slums in the fringe areas of the city, informed a health official.

The MGM hospital is inundated with patients suffering from viral fever and malaria but because of shortage of beds, the hospital is not able to accommodate all patients.

"We cannot provide bed facility to all patients. We are, however, making alternative arrangements for them," said S S Prasad, superintendent, MGM hospital.

That really is a phenomenal find. It isn't clear what may have caused those illnesses, but the article in detail describes a severe illness with a CFR of >10% and neurological manifestations (and possible laboratory evidence of a WNV-like virus - page 1303 of article), something very different than what is reported this time.

Whatever etiology was responsible for that outbreak should be considered for some of the other "AES" outbreaks elsewhere in India.

Jaideep DeoghariaJaideep Deogharia, TNN | Aug 5, 2011, 07.04AM IST

RANCHI: With viral fever taking on a near epidemic proportion here, hospitals and nursing homes are overflowing with patients. To add to the woes is the strike by contract doctors. With nearly 400 doctors going on mass leave since July 18, patients in the periphery have no option but to rush to private clinics in cities and district hospitals.

...

A doctor of clinical pathology at Apollo Hospital here, Bikas Kumar, said every month they are getting dengue cases. "The most common virus in Jharkhand is influenza but as the virus is short lived (about three days) it is cured by the time the patient decides to go for a pathological test," he said.

He said, other forms of viruses like parbo, herpis, NS1 (for dengue) are also reported occasionally. "We conduct serological tests to confirm the nature of the virus but during a general blood test for the total count and differential count of white blood cells, one can say with certain if the patient has been attacked by a virus," said Kumar.
