TUNISIA
The national health authorities of Tunisia reported 3
human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in Kebili
governorate, near the oasis located on the birds’
migratory road (cf. map 3).
The WNV cases were diagnosed in 3 females aged 61,
70 and 77 years old, between 14th October 2011 and
18th October 2011.
The cases were confirmed by the Pasteur Institute of
Tunis. No other suspected cases were notified in the
area and no animal cases are suspected till now.
They are the first reported cases in Tunisia for the
2011 season. The last human WNV cases were
reported in the country in October 2010.
Concerning human WNV cases, a permanent and
passive surveillance system for viral meningitis and
encephalitis is in place in some regions (humid areas
with birds) in Tunisia, with a seasonal surveillance
reinforcement in late spring and summer.
