  • Tunisia reports 3 human West Nile Fever infections

    TUNISIA

     The national health authorities of Tunisia reported 3
    human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in Kebili
    governorate, near the oasis located on the birds’
    migratory road (cf. map 3).

     The WNV cases were diagnosed in 3 females aged 61,
    70 and 77 years old, between 14th October 2011 and
    18th October 2011.

     The cases were confirmed by the Pasteur Institute of
    Tunis. No other suspected cases were notified in the
    area and no animal cases are suspected till now.

     They are the first reported cases in Tunisia for the
    2011 season. The last human WNV cases were
    reported in the country in October 2010.

    Concerning human WNV cases, a permanent and
    passive surveillance system for viral meningitis and
    encephalitis is in place in some regions (humid areas
    with birds) in Tunisia, with a seasonal surveillance
    reinforcement in late spring and summer.
