Just a note that the 4 year old confirmed case and the 3 new sus cases are all from in/around the same town -- Nabarouh [aka Enberoh, aka Nabaruh]: http://tinyurl.com/2dej7h

Also, fun with Google ... while looking for info on where these 4 people are from, I googled 'Nabaruh' and got as a spelling prompt: "Did you mean nabarro?"

          17 new sus cases yesterday

          17 new sus cases yesterday:

          4 in Al Qalyubiyah -- 3 unnamed in Banha Fevers and 1, Islam Mahmoud Mohamed, in another hospital;
          4(?) in Al Gharbiyah -- 2 in the District Fevers hosp and 2(?) in Tanta Fevers;
9 cases in Ad Daqahliyah -- where the 4 yr old pos case is from. These 9 people are from Kafr El Geneina [aka "the garden hamlet village"] in Nabarouh district.

Note that there was a new outbreak in poultry confirmed in Kafr El Geneina just the other day (reported on the 3rd). Kafr Al Geneina means the "garden disbelief village" -- the 3 sus cases I reported yestereday were from "the goodness village" -- so I don't think the 3 from yestereday and the 9 from today overlap.

Also, a report on how one sus case -- Insaf Abdaldaem -- in Ash Sharqiyah is doing. Sounds like this case was admitted sometime before yesterday (i.e. is not part of the 17).

Also, some reported negatives: "the analyses came a negative of previous conditions" in the District Fevers hosp in Al Gharbiyah -- I think this is Al Mahallah Al Kubra Hosp.

Hat-tip to pugmom for finding this article!

          Machine-translated from Arabic:

And in the western [Al Gharbiyah] the detention of two conditions took place by the district fevers while the analyses came a negative of previous conditions, as the detention of new cases took place by Tanta fevers.

And in the eastern [Ash Sharqiyah] citizen Insaf Abdaldaem's condition was still by Zagazig fevers a reassuring and receives the treatment and waiting for the analyses result and at the same time that the fortification [vaccination] works take place to the chicken all over the governorate villages.

Hat-tip to pugmom again for finding this article! Also, as she rightly points out, this is not the first case to recover this year -- the 5 year old boy also did.

            Machine-translated from Arabic:

The recovery of a child in Dakahlia from the bird flu disease
            March 6, 2007

The child Sara by Reham four years from Dakahlia Governate, left [was discharged from] Al Bakri's facility hospital after its [her] regaining of the recovery from the injury by the bird flu disease.

And this is considered the condition no. 23 between who were injured by the disease, and the number of 12 of the recovery conditions, while 11 case was dead, as it is considered this the first recovery case this year.

Re: EGYPT - March 4, 2007+ - News on sus cases

Someone asked for a brief summary of the number of confirmed/suspected cases in Egypt as of late, so here we go (to the best of my knowledge)...

In February -- two confirmed cases died; one 5 year old boy recovered and went home; one 4 year old girl was confirmed (now also recovered); and one additional case reportedly tested pos but that announcement was later denied by the Ministry of Health.

55 sus cases were reported in the press in February (that we're aware of) -- including one HCW. 7 negatives were reported.

So far in March -- 21 new sus cases have been reported in the press.

12 of these from Ad Daqahliyah governorate where the last confirmed case, 4 year old Sara Al Sayed Barham, is from. Sara, happily, has now been discharged from hospital.

A four-year-old Egyptian girl who contracted the H5N1 bird flu virus several days ago recovered on Monday after receiving due medical treatment, a health official said.

Sarah Borhan, from Daqahlia Governorate, 90 km north of Cairo, was discharged from hospital after taking Tamiflu tablets, the official MENA news agency quoted local hospital director Yousri Ragab as saying.

Suffering from high temperature after contacting infected domestic poultry, Borhan was admitted to the Mansoura Chest Hospital on Feb. 26, Ragab said.

Borhan had been the 23rd human bird flu case since the H5N1 virus was first detected in dead poultry in Egypt on Feb. 17, 2006. The virus has since then spread to 20 of the country's 26 governorates.

Egypt reported the first human bird flu case on March 18, 2006. Of the 23 human bird flu cases, 13 people died and 10 recovered.

Sarah Borham, 4 years old from El Dakahlia Governorate is the patient number 23. She was infected on 27/2/2007.

This patient is number 23 regarding the infected ones: 12 recovered while 11 passed away. This is the first case to be recovered this year.

Apparently the authorities don't count the 5 yo boy who recovered ?, Not confirmed?

                        From Min of Health

Some Countries seek Egypt's Bird Flu expertise

                        March 08, 2007

"Some countries have sought to benefit from Egypt's expertise in fighting bird flu," said the chairman of the State Information Service (SIS).

Ambassador Ayman Al-Kaffas, who also doubles as the spokesman for the higher national committee for combating bird flu, said the US envoy who is tasked with fighting the H5N1 virus has hailed the Egyptian government's efforts on fighting the virus.

The remarks were made urging a meeting of the national committee for combating bird flu under Health Minister Hatem El-Gabali.

During the Egyptian national anti-bird flu committee meeting, reports on the spread of the avian flu were reviewed, said SIS Chairman Ayman Kaffas.

A total of 23 people contracted the virus, 13 died and the rest recovered, he added. Some 21 of the human bird flu cases contracted the virus because of people's direct contact with sick poultry, he added. (and the other two?., ed)

Kaffas noted that efforts were under way to produce a local bird flu vaccine.

During Wednesday7/3/2007 meeting, the Cabinet tackled a bill on poultry trade that would be presented to the People's Assembly, kaffas noted.

Kaffas said the bill would impose stricter measures on moving poultry among governorates and would prevent poultry slaughter outside state slaughterhouses.

He added that the World Health organization hailed the efforts exerted by Egypt in combating the avian flu. case to be recovered this year.
