    Environment minister apologizes to Minamata disease sufferers

    MINAMATA, Japan (Kyodo) -- Environment Minister Goshi Hosono on Sunday apologized for the time it is taking the government to resolve the issue of providing relief measures to uncertified sufferers of Minamata mercury poisoning disease caused by the release of tainted water into the sea decades ago.

      July Deadline Set for Minamata Disease Relief Applications

      Tokyo, Feb. 3 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Environment Ministry said Friday that it will stop accepting state financial relief applications on July 31 from victims of Minamata disease, which was caused by mercury pollution.

          Court rules woman be posthumously certified as Minamata disease sufferer

          FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- The Fukuoka High Court required the Kumamoto prefectural government on Monday to certify a woman posthumously as a sufferer of Minamata mercury-poisoning disease, overturning a district court ruling that dismissed the case.
