I think the FAO report is probably referring to one of these patients. A man and his sister, both dead, confirmed by Ministry of Health as bird flu positive.

    machine translation -

Two deaths from bird flu Dakahlia
    Tuesday, December 20, 2011 - 19:43

At a citizen of the province of Dakahlia, yesterday, was killed Hospital, Damietta, after suffering from bird flu in the first emergence of a pandemic this year, where he died, Mr. Hamdi, Mr. Rizk "29 years old, a resident of the village inn, the center of Monia victory" and confirmed the result of laboratory tests are central to the Ministry of health, illness avian influenza. The medical source that the man died abscess in the lung after participating in a brawl, and after going to the hospital for treatment, the doctors take the scanner from the throat of the patient, was sent to the laboratory of the Central Ministry of Health, which confirmed his bird flu, but it died in the hospital yesterday. Re: Egypt -Man & Sister Confirmed H5N1 Deaths by Ministry of Health + FAO report - Dakahlia

Earlier FAO report (http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...00&postcount=1 ) cited two cases (1 died) in Dakahlia.

I wonder whether these cases are related to those reported by the WHO on December 15 2011 (a mother and her child, http://www.who.int/csr/don/2011_12_15/en/index.html ) or are the same cases at all.

In this case, the third case could pave the way on the conclusion that this is a familiar cluster.

Re: Egypt -Man & Sister Confirmed H5N1 Deaths by Ministry of Health + FAO report - Dakahlia

Ishtiaq Hamdy seems to be the pregnant female that died from H5N1 on December 3, 2011 and is a WHO confirmed case. She and her child were reported to be residents of Menyet El-Nasr (also Meniat El-Nasr [Administrative level 2]) which is located about 20 miles from Damietta where she and her child were apparently hospitalized. Her 29 year old brother, Hamdy Rizq, is reported to be from a village in Menyet El-Nasr possibly El-Geneina (administrative level 4) as reported in post #1. According to post #2 above he was taken to the Damietta hospital and died on December 3 after suffering an injury in a ?brawl?. That would suggest that while he may have been infected with the H5N1 virus at the time, he was not as sick as his sister or his sister?s child.

It is not clear if these family members all resided in the same location in Menyet El-Nasr in Al Daqahliyah Governorate or how this family cluster is connected.

Re: Egypt, Dakahlia Gov. - Brother of Previously Confirmed H5N1 Case Dies from H5N1; reported by Ministry of Health & FAO

While this translation is difficult to follow in English, it reaffirms the previous posts that the man who died was the brother of the dead pregnant woman who was previously confirmed by WHO. The article implies that the brother and sister resided together and raised backyard poultry. According to this report contact tracing failed to identify any other infected individuals (except of course the woman's child who has already been confirmed). Today would be the 17th day since the brother and sister died, enough time to allow for H5N1 incubation to manifest itself among additional contacts of these infected individuals.

The death of the first two cases of bird flu in Dakahlia

          Books - Shafie Sama

At the citizen and his sister from the province of Dakahlia were killed in the case of Damietta hospital after contracting bird flu, and edit the record necessary after clearing the house of birds; in coordination with the Ministry of Health.

The Major General, "Omar Abdel-Latif," the director of security Dakahlia had received notification from the hospital Damietta Btovy two cases of the same family status Monia victory [Menyet El-Nasr] Dakahlia, the "longing Hamdy Mr." after she was diagnosed with bird flu during her pregnancy, and the second is her brother "Mohammed Hamdi al-Sayed," which died after two weeks.
The medical campaign visited the home of the deceased in light of fears of bird flu return to Egypt, and found that they are breeding birds, their home, which prompted doctors to detect and work analysis to all close contacts of thedeceased and found that all results are negative.

We need further clarification. The PCR test results, as reported from FAO in post #1, date to December 3, 2011. I suppose he could have been hospitalized for 16 days. We still don't know the status of his niece/nephew.

I agree. The situation is confusing. It appears the brother may have been sick for approximately 2 weeks after H5N1 confirmation.

Avian influenza - situation in Egypt - update 59

                  21 December 2011

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of a case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.‪

The case is a 29-year-old male from Dakahlia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 8 December 2011 and was admitted to hospital on 15 December 2011, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He was in critical condition and died on 19 December 2011.

The case was confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Centre of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network on 18 December 2011.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to backyard poultry.

Of the 156 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 54 have been fatal.

Besides announcing another H5N1 case from Egypt, the WHO report above provides no context about this individual.

It is clear from the local media reports posted above that this individual was related to the two previously reported H5N1 cases from Dakahlia, a mother and child (link). I don't understand why there is no mention of these family connections in the WHO report.

If the sister died on December 3 and the brother showed symptoms on the 8th, this could be a human to human transmission of H5N1. So I think we need to keep this in mind, whether or not, there were sick chickens still in the area after the mother and child became sick 2 weeks earlier.
