The article says large numbers of dead birds found in 2 locations in Davis County, UT, are not related to recent grebe deaths. I'm not sure, and perhaps the news media is not sure, whether poison pellets at one location were found when the dead birds were found, or were placed there later. USDA says they are not responsible for the bird deaths, but communications are overall unclear.
I wish we knew if the government had diagnosed a disease in the dead birds, and then placed the pellets in an effort to control disease spread.

Here is an earlier article that reported that state wildlife officials told reporters that the birds had been poisoned on a nearby farm and would continue to fall for a few more days. But that is the statement that seems to have been retracted by the time the article above was written.
