DENPASAR - MICOM: Head of the Bali Provincial Health Office said Nyoman Sutedja, until now handling management of bird flu virus in Bali has been running very well.

"So far, handling or management of bird flu has been very maximum throughout Bali," he said, in Renon, Saturday (17/12).

For the cases that arose during this already decreased dramatically, because both the Department of Health and Animal Husbandry Department has been working very maximum that the case has been very little.

currently there are 57 suspected cases, and only 2 people who died during 2011. Suspect cases immediately given Tamiflu, and they all survived or helped.

While two people who died came from Bangli being late to get treatment. The rest can be handled properly. It is feared now is the small traders who just got be some chicken in the house but not well cared for. (OL-11)

    Media Errors

This media report is factually wrong. There was a family cluster of mother and two offspring from Bali in October. All three family members died. Here are the links to the WHO reports.

Indonesia routinely applies a "Tamiflu Blanket", so it is not surprising that "57 suspected cases" survived. The question is - How many of these tested positive for H5N1 prior to receiving oseltamivir? And were any of them tested later for antibodies? If we knew these things, we we might then get a sense of the rate of H5N1 infection in Bali.

It is not surprising that Indonesia has the highest CFR for H5N1 of any country in the world. Indonesia only seems to officially report human cases of H5N1 that die.
