The problem with infections will continue until the cycle of crows>poultry and crows>crows stops. It is a moot point as to whether the crows are becoming infected through scavenging on dead poultry or some other means.

Infections may be impossible to stop from spreading 100s of miles beyond the outbreak areas especially if crows congregate with other 'unknown' (potentially infected) crows...as they will naturally fly outside the culling zones, and infected crows will infect fresh poultry areas. Infected poultry will then become a vector again in the local area, until the culling again catches up.

But the infection cycle could be slowed or stopped through a ban on all poultry movements within the migratory distance that crows will/ could travel for a quarantine period. Evenutally the infection would burn itself out, and the supply of dead chicken carrion (to act as a new infection source for more crows) would stop.

This reasoning all falls down however if there is an additional vector in the mix.

                          Gaya on avian flu radar

                          PIYUSH KUMAR TRIPATHI
Patna, Feb. 26: The state animal husbandry directorate has stated that Gaya is the only district in Bihar where mortality among crows because of avian flu (H5N1) has been confirmed till date.

This also means that there has been no report about such mysterious deaths of crows in Patna district.

Rajesh Kumar, the director of the state animal husbandry directorate, told The Telegraph: ?After reports of death of 1,700 crows because of avian influenza in Jharkhand between September and November last year, the health department issued a state-wide alert in November. Subsequently, we also issued high alert for our rapid response team in six districts ? Gaya, Jamui, Aurangabad, Bhagalpur, Banka and Lakhisarai.?

He added: ?Only 10 samples sent from Gaya to the high-security animal disease laboratory, Bhopal, tested positive for H5N1. Except that, there have been no reports of suspected avian flu among crows from anywhere else.?

Gopal Sharma, a scientist with Zoological Survey of India, Patna, who has spotted several cases of mysterious deaths of crows in and around Patna in the past few days, said: ?Last week, I saw five dead crows on the premises of Patna Science College. Their bodies can still be found there. If the animal husbandry directorate is claiming that they have not received any reports, then it shows that their monitoring mechanism is inefficient.?

However, experts claimed that reports of such suspected disease in crows have come down in Bihar in the past 10 days.

?Except for a few suspected cases reported from Bhagalpur, Banka and Nawada, the number of suspected cases reported at the avian influenza monitoring cell in Patna has gone down in the past 10 days. Moreover, migratory birds normally transmit avian flu and they arrive in Bihar in the winter and leave by the onset of summer. It is expected that the number of reported cases would further drop with the rise in temperature,? said a senior official in the avian influenza monitoring cell of the animal husbandry directorate.

                            Bihar alert on avian influenza

Patna - Bihar has sounded an alert against possible spread of avian influenza after a large number of crows died in the state from bird flu, officials said Sunday.

The health department has directed all district civil surgeons to keep in touch with the district animal husbandry department and follow the advise of its director.

"The civil surgeons have been asked to prepare and keep a rapid response team to meet an influenza breakout and report unnatural human deaths immediately," a health department official said.

Last week, it was revealed in a report of the Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) that crows are dying in Bihar because of bird flu.

The HSADL confirmed the deaths in Gaya district.

The Bihar government then directed the animal husbandry department to take steps to deal with the situation.
