CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines ? The Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Mindanao (Region 10) has declared a leptospirosis outbreak in the city and has placed government and non-government hospitals in Northern Mindanao on a ?Code Red? status.

DoH-10 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas issued the order after 200 charts and records of admissions and outpatient consultations were reviewed from the different hospitals in the city last Dec. 29-31.

Bernadas said 128 of these patients fitted the case definition of suspected leptospirosis, with ages ranging from one year to 75 years old.

Eighty-one percent of the patients were males or 113 out of 139, he said.

Bernadas said Barangay Macasandig here had the highest incidence registering 25 cases, followed by Balulang with 16 cases, Consolacion, Bulua and Puntod, nine cases each, Carmen and Iponan, eight cases each and Kauswagan and Barra, five cases each.

There were also five deaths with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 3.9 percent.

The DoH here said there is an ongoing outbreak of leptospirosis in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, especially, in areas affected by the flash floods brought about by tropical storm ?Sendong? where more than a thousand people perished.

Majority of those affected with leptospirosis waded or swam in flood waters, which resulted in morbidities ranging from acute respiratory infections, injuries, fever and leptospirosis, among others, Bernadas said...
