Harare - Authorities say more than 660 people have been treated for typhoid in Zimbabwe's capital but that the outbreak of the bacterial disease appears to be waning.

Harare health director Dr Prosper Chonzi says about 70 people were in the hospital on Tuesday. Another 20 were sent home after treatment. He says no deaths have been reported.

      Typhoid hits Zimbabwe capital

At least 90 people were admitted to hospital and over 600 affected in a typhoid outbreak in the Zimbabwean capital Harare, a health official says.

"We have attended to over 600 cases in Kuwadzana alone," city health director Prosper Chonzi was quoted as saying in the state-owned Herald newspaper.

"We have confirmed that the disease is typhoid. We have not recorded any deaths. We have over 90 patients admitted at the Beatrice Infectious Diseases Hospital."

Chonzi said city health authorities found traces of the typhoid bacteria in meat samples taken from open-air vendors.

Typhoid thrives in areas that do not have proper sanitation.

Poor hygiene and sanitation have caused numerous disease outbreaks in Zimbabwe in recent years.

HARARE, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- In Zimbabwe's capital Harare, many of the hotels, restaurants and open air food spots face immediate closure for failing to meet health and hygienic standards amid fears that a cholera outbreak looms, state media warned on Saturday.

The move is part of a cocktail of measures designed to contain the spread of typhoid and follow recent reports indicating that a hotel worker had tested positive for typhoid.

            ...

As of Friday afternoon, 882 typhoid cases had been attended to in Kuwadzana, the epicenter of the outbreak. Another 64 people were admitted at the Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospitals while on Thursday alone, 53 people were treated of typhoid symptoms at Kuwadzana Polyclinic.

Zimbabwe treats more than 1,500 typhoid cases
                (AFP) ? 46 minutes ago

HARARE ? Zimbabwe is reporting up to 50 cases of typhoid per day and has treated more than 1,500 people in an outbreak blamed on poor water and sanitation facilities, the health minister said Tuesday.

"By the end of December 2011, more than 1,500 cases had been seen and treated," Henry Madzorera told a news conference in the capital Harare.

"An average of 30 to 50 cases are reported on a daily basis."

The bacterial disease is transmitted by contaminated food and water. Since the current outbreak started last October, 350 suspected cases and 16 confirmations were reported in the first three weeks of this year. No deaths have been reported up to now...

Zimbabwe: Harare to Ration Water in Wealthy Suburbs As Typhoid Cases Rise
By Tererai Karimakwenda, 1 February 2012

The City of Harare announced drastic measures on Tuesday in an effort to contain the typhoid outbreak threatening the capital, including water rationing for the wealthy suburbs and the closure of all water holes dug up by desperate residents in the poor areas.

At a press conference Tuesday, town clerk Tendai Mahachi said the poor townships would receive uninterrupted water supplies to help eliminate typhoid. He said wealthy areas would be provided water about twice per week. Mahachi is quoted as saying: "the wealthy can afford to buy water" and cope with outages.

Health Minister Dr. Henry Madzorera told the reporters that an average of 30 to 50 cases of typhoid were being reported daily and more than 1,500 had been treated by the end of December last year. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far...

Two suspected typhoid deaths in Zimbabwe
                      13 February, 2012 01:57:00 DPA

THE Health Ministry in Zimbabwe said on Monday it has recorded two suspected typhoid deaths, as an outbreak of the disease appeared to worsen.

The ministry was awaiting laboratory analysis to confirm if the deaths were the result of the bacterial disease that is spread through contaminated food
and water. The two people were reported to have died in the last five days.

Since the start of the outbreak in late October, 2,716 cases have been identified, mostly in two crowded townships with limited and run-down
sanitation infrastructure near the capital Harare.

Zimbabwe: Two Succumb to Typhoid, 2 000 Treated
                        15 February 2012

TWO people have died and about 2 000 patients have been treated of typhoid since the first case was recorded last year in October.

Harare City Council Director of Health Services Dr Prosper Chonzi said one fatality was that of a 15-year-old boy who was previously treated for typhoid and discharged. Dr Chonzi said it was established that the boy did not finish the course given to him upon discharge.

He said upon investigation, it was found that his father confiscated the prescribed tablets citing religious beliefs.

He said the other case involved a lady who died at Beatrice Infectious Diseases Hospital (Nazareth) upon arrival...

Some 203 new cases of typhoid were this week recorded as the disease spread to other parts of the country amid fears the contagion could explode to the 2008 cholera outbreak levels.
The fresh cases were recorded in Kuwadzana (93), Mufakose (31), Crowborough (22), Parirenyatwa Hospital (1), Bindura (23) and other areas across the country (33).

Since the first outbreak in October, the epidemic has claimed one life and recorded 3 074 suspected cases.

                            Typhoid slowly engulfing Zimbabwe
by Peter Marimudza Wednesday 29 February 2012

HARARE -- A typhoid outbreak that began in Harare last year is steadily spreading across Zimbabwe with more than 3 000 cases reported although only one death due to the disease has been reported so far, health officials have said.

New infections have in recent months been recorded in districts lying several hundreds of kilometres away from the capital, highlighting the risk that the typhoid outbreak could turn into a crisis of similar proportions to a cholera epidemic that wrecked havoc across Zimbabwe from 2008 to 2009...

SOME 3,000 cases of typhoid have been reported in Harare since the first case was detected in a working-class suburb in January, state media reported on Sunday.

"At the moment we have over 3,000 cases, both suspected and confirmed," The Sunday Mail newspaper quoted Prosper Chonzi, the city's health services director as saying.

More than 90 people from one of the capital's suburbs, Kuwadzana, were admitted to hospital in January. Health authorities banned open-air food vending to try to curb the spread of the disease.
"Our worry is that typhoid is now spreading to other areas adjacent to Kuwadzana," Chonzi said...
