Malibu Restaurant Worker Found in Pool of Blood Died of Respiratory Disease [UPDATED]

UPDATE 4:07 PM Assistant Coroner Chief Ed added he could not confirm the information released by the LASD that indicates Rodas died of an "upper respiratory disease."

Asked if an upper respiratory infection could indicate tuberculosis, Winter said it could, however he said it also could have been another kind of infection, reports CNS

For Fair Use. The report also stated a possible beating may have been involved. Was not sure if this was the right place to put this. It has a lot of inuendo but not much in the way of fact.
We were put on this earth to help and take care of one another.

UPDATE 4:07 PM Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter has expressed dismay this afternoon regarding the LASD's release of information about Rodas' cause of death, according to CNS. Winter said he was "irritated at this," and explained that a sheriff's detective placed a security hold on the case, which barred anyone at the coroner's office from discussing the case.
Winter added he could not confirm the information released by the LASD that indicates Rodas died of an "upper respiratory disease."

Update: Death of Guido's kitchen worker
      By Knowles Adkisson
      Published:
      Thursday, March 22, 2012 11:45 PM PDT

A lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who investigated the death of Carlos Ivan Rodas, a kitchen worker at Guido’s restaurant who was found dead outside of the restaurant Sunday night, said on Thursday that investigators did not examine Rodas' body before the sheriff's department issued an initial press release claiming Rodas had been beaten to death.

Rodas, 32, was found by a co-worker lying in a pool of blood outside the restaurant at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday night after he left the restaurant to take out garbage. According to sheriff’s officials, the co-worker ran inside the restaurant and told the restaurant manager, who has been identified in other media outlets as Tony Waldrop. Sheriff’s officials say the manager applied first aid to Rodas while 911 was called. Paramedics responded to the 911 call and pronounced Rodas dead at the scene.

Sgt. John O?Brien confirmed his office had placed the hold on the autopsy results.

?There was a lot of speculation going on, so we wanted to control that speculation,? O?Brien said. ?And we basically, any information that we?re going to release on this is going to come out of our office, instead of coming a piece from here, a piece from there. So by us putting a hold on it, to get information you have to come for us and we can give one complete statement as [opposed to] the piecemealing things.?

The press release issued Wednesday stated that Rodas died from an upper respiratory disease. O?Brien confirmed that that information was based on results from the autopsy. He said the sheriff?s department is now awaiting testing from the coroner?s office to determine the nature of Rodas?s infection. O?Brien said the test results could come back in as soon as one week or as long as six weeks.

?[The coroners] actually physically have to grow a culture and test what it is, if there is anything,? O?Brien said. ?There may be nothing, it may just be something he had already that they can?t determine.?

<!-- end mainImgContainer -->MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said Thursday it was investigating the Sunday death of a worker in Malibu.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday the death of a dishwasher at a Malibu restaurant was not crime-related.
Carlos Rodas, 32, was found outside Guido's Malibu on the 3800 block of Cross Creek Road at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. He had staggered to the front of the restaurant where he worked, and then collapsed and died.

Police initially thought that Rodas was beaten to death due to the preliminary evidence. But after further investigation, detectives have determined that Rodas' death was the result of an upper respiratory infection.

Rodas was found covered in blood in front of the restaurant.
According to the sheriff's department, Rodas had no external trauma to his body.http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...les&id=8591924

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- A worker at a Malibu restaurant was found dead, and deputies are trying to determine if it was murder or natural causes.

The man, a dishwasher at the restaurant identified only as "Carlos," was found outside Guido's Malibu on the 3800 block of Cross Creek Road at about 8:30 p.m. The man staggered to the front of the restaurant, where he collapsed.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead when they arrived on scene. Earlier in the day, authorities said it looked like it was a beating death as there was a lot of blood at the scene. However, deputies now say the man may have died of natural causes, but they cannot confirm that without a coroner's report.
According to the sheriff's department, the man had no external trauma to his body.
The case is still being investigated as a homicide until an official cause of death has been determined.
Shops in the area were closed at the time, but Guido's was still open and there were a few patrons still inside.
Investigators want to interview a man who was seen walking through the parking lot about a half hour before the worker's death. The man was described as a white or Hispanic male in his 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 180 pounds, clean shaven, with light-colored short hair. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved blue sweatshirt and dark blue or black denim jeans.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...les&id=8586324

Statement Regarding Death at Local Restaurant

City seeks to diffuse conflicting stories reported since the event

Malibu, California ? The City of Malibu issued the following statement today regarding the death of a worker at a local restaurant that occurred on Sunday, March 18, 2012:

Over the last few days, the City has been in constant communication with the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department regarding the tragic death of an employee at a local restaurant. In order to provide clear information and to help alleviate several conflicting reports surrounding the cause of death, the Sheriff?s Department issued a statement that the death appears to be respiratory in nature, but no other specifics have been given. In the interest of public safety, as well as the need to provide the community with information and the pressure to release information, the Sheriff?s Department provided preliminary assessments based upon witness accounts and the appearance of the scene.

Initial assessments by medical, fire and law enforcement personnel led to the belief that a violent crime may have taken place. As in many investigations, until all of the evidence has been verified, the cause of death may be modified. As always, the first concern was for public safety in the actual event this was determined to be a homicide.

The City is disappointed by the confusing and contradictory messages given to the media and public about this tragedy. The City?s goal is to get the most accurate and up to date information before disseminating it to the community. Public safety and public health are the City?s most important issues and the City is working hard to get the correct facts regarding this incident to allay any fears that may have arisen. The Sheriff?s Department and County Coroner are working diligently to determine the exact cause of death. The City will continue to collaborate closely with the Sheriff?s Department on communication to the public until the final medical report is issued that will separate the facts from fiction in this very confusing, yet tragic, case.

Malibu Mayor Laura Rosenthal added, ?The City extends our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Rodas? family and friends during this very difficult time. A young man has died, no matter the circumstances, and we wish to respect the pain and suffering of his loved ones at this time. I will be working to get as much information as possible about this tragedy and make sure that our residents and community are safe.?

The City of Malibu was incorporated on March 28, 1991. Located in Northwest Los Angeles County, the City has 21 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean and a population of 12,645.

The report in #3 and #4 suggests that the autopsy is complete and that the cod is respiratory infection. The only thing that's pending is identifying the agent involved. I'm surprised that CDC is not involved in this case.

We will have to wait for the full investigation. The brother of the victim has commented on the link above that even he does not know the cause of death.

It is certainly possible that this death could be the result of traumua, either accidental or intentional, or the result of illness. I find it mildly odd that the first illness mentioned in this thread in connection with this case is TB, despite no reported history of illness. We have dozens of threads here at FT of sudden respiratory illness involving coughing up blood that is actually caused by influenza instead, including:

                        http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?p=298297 [H1N1]

                        http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=182675 [Influenza B]

                        http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?p=446933 [H3N2]

And that doesn't even count the possibility of some more exotic respiratory illness. It might also be useful to know whether the individual has travelled back home to his native Guatemala recently, as that would raise the possibility of dengue hemorrhagic fever as well.

This case also reminds me of the case of a woman who died covered in blood in a taxi in Nairobi, Kenya, for whom infectious disease was ruled out, but no clear cause was ever announced, and the death was presumed due to natural causes:

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health on Friday afternoon issued a press release stating it has not found evidence suggesting an increased risk to public safety as it awaits test results taken from the man who died of an upper respiratory illness outside Guido?s restaurant Sunday. Carlos Ivan Rodas, 32, collapsed outside the restaurant Sunday evening at about 8:30 p.m. A significant amount of blood was present at the scene, and some concerns have been expressed within the community that Rodas may have carried an infectious disease. The press release added that it has not found any reason to close the restaurant for public health reasons. Read the full press release below:

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is working with the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner in reviewing the case of an employee of Guido?s Restaurant in Malibu, who died on March 18, 2012. Public Health has not found any problem that would increase the risk to the public?s health, nor has it found any public health reason to close the restaurant. The Department of Coroner is awaiting the results of microscopic tissue studies and biological laboratory cultures to aid in the determination of manner and cause of death.
