National Geographic has been doing a series on fringe groups this time the group being studied are what they are calling Doomsday Preppers. Each show highlights 2 or 3 individuals, families or groups that is preparing for some disaster or apocalypse.
Last night one of the segments was on a woman who was preparing her family and community for The Bird Flu.* The segment demonstrated methods for obtaining and making clean, potable water and the use of N-95 masks. The prepper invited a nurse to show her how to set up an outside decontamination station/shower and quarantine room. Her son must have lost the toss as he was the designated exposure victim for the demonstration drill.
The decontamination station consisted of a small Kiddy pool, about four long poles to hang a privacy curtain on (with duck tape) and a hose with a shower head attachment. The poor kid had to strip in the pool and hand his contaminated clothes out to be put in a plastic trash bag for disposal. His mom then showered him with the hose and then gave him clean clothes. The water and the temperature were both a little cold.
She then escorted him into the quarantine room the nurse had helped her to set up. They had used sheets of clear plastic tapped to the ceiling to make two doors to prevent airflow from the quarantine room to the rest of the home. They did not go into how food, supplies and waste were to be brought in and out of the quarantine room other than state the mother was the only person designated to do it. They also did not go into any procedures on how things like mail, food, supplies and waste were to be brought in and out of the house to prevent contamination.
