At Least Two Missing in Gulf Oil Rig Blast

    ...
At least two people are missing and "probably overboard," according to Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vegas. But that number could rise because as many as 15 people are still unaccounted for, the Coast Guard said.
    ...
Among the injured were four who were airlifted for medical treatment to the West Jefferson Medical Center, where they are in critical condition after suffering serious burns. All four are intubated and will be evacuated to Baton Rouge Burn Center when they are stabilized, according to West Jefferson spokesman Taslin Alfonzo.

Eleven other individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment. There were between 26 and 28 people on board at the time of the explosion, according to the Coast Guard.

The platform was located about 20 nautical miles southeast of Grand Isle, La., when the explosion happened, Vega said.

The fire at the rig has been put out, but an oil sheen has spread over more than a 2-mile area on the water, the Coast Guard said.

    ...
Ships and helicopters are searching for two oil rig workers who disappeared when an explosion rocked a gulf oil rig off the coast of Louisiana and set it on fire, Coast Guard officials said.

The explosion and subsequent fire broke out after workers used a cutting torch to cut into a 75-foot-long, 3-inch-wide line on the platform.
Another explosive welding related accident resulting in serious injury (and this time 2 deaths ) so soon after the Kentucky disaster? There are safety procedures established to ensure pipelines and tanks are flushed of flammables prior to welding and that the general area is ventilated.

The work looks dangerous enough even when done as safely as possible, (videos were taken on another offshore rig):

Divers privately contracted by Black Elk Energy found a body Saturday night near an oil production platform owned by the company...

The divers found the body while inspecting the platform Saturday evening, Vega said.

The victim's identity had not been released late Saturday.

The Coast Guard was transporting the body to local authorities Saturday night.

The Coast Guard's own search, which used a boat and three helicopters, was called off about 5:25 p.m., Vega said. Vega said he did not know what time the body was found.

The death toll from an oil platform explosion and fire earlier this month has risen to three after the Lafourche Parish coroner identified a body found Monday as one of the platform's workers.

The body was identified as 28-year-old Jerome Malagapo, who has been missing since the Black Elk Energy platform he was working on exploded Nov. 16, Coroner John King said...
Mr. Malagapo's body was found near Port Fourchon, about 25 miles from the explosion site. Mr. Ellroy Corporal died the day of the explosion, and Mr. Avelino Tajonera died Nov. 23 from severe burns he suffered from the fire caused by the explosion.
