    Number Of Flu Cases On Rise

    "Aches, coughs and fevers swept through Polk County in late 2012, more than doubling the number of cases of flu or flu-like illnesses that county health officials recorded the previous season.

    The Polk County Health Department recorded 1,152 cases of flu or flu-like illnesses from October to December. In 2011, the number reached only 445.

    ...Hospitals show the most striking contrast in numbers. Between October and December, Lakeland Regional Medical Center tested 2,674 patients for flu and 352 came back positive.

    During the same period in 2011, 690 patients were tested for the flu and only two were positive.

    Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center treated 45 patients from October to December with the flu or a virus with similar symptoms, all but 10 of them arriving last month. In 2011, it treated only two."
