Health officials investigating E. coli outbreak in N.S., N.B.

Public health officials in Nova Scotia are investigating an E. coli outbreak that occurred over Christmas and might be linked to similar cases in New Brunswick.

Seven cases of E. coli 0157 infection were detected in Nova Scotia between Dec. 23 and 26, Dr. Robert Strang, the province's chief public health officer, said Friday.

"Two people remain in hospital," Strang said. "The other five were sick but have recovered or are recovering..."

HALIFAX -- Health officials in Nova Scotia were narrowing down possible culprits in an E. coli outbreak Monday as three more cases of the bacterial infection were confirmed in the province.

Canadian Health Officials Report 15 E. coli Illnesses in Eastern Provinces

"Canada?s eastern and adjoining provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are reporting 15 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7. None of the illnesses have yet been traced to a source.

Ten of the E. coli illnesses are located in central Nova Scotia, with five reported by the Capital District Health, two by the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority, and one each by the Pictou, Cumberland, and Colcherster East Hants health authorities.

On the other side of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, heath officials reported two cases were reported in the St. John region and three in the Fredericton region...".
