    Dengue death figure fudged: report
By Prithvijit Mitra, TNN | Jan 25, 2013, 02.57 AM IST

    Kolkata.
    ...
Compiled with data collected over the last four years, mostly from government sources, the report titled "Status of Environment Report in West Bengal" will be released at the Kolkata Book Fair on January 26. It has collated and analysed figures on a range of areas including air quality, water, waste management, noise pollution, public health, vector borne diseases, demography, wetlands, forest and wildlife and biodiversity, with a special focus on conversion of banks, polluting ferroalloy factories in the city and violation of coastal zone regulations at Mandarmani.
    ...
"Reports and data that we have compiled from various sources, including government ones, tell a different story. There is enough evidence to suggest that the dengue outbreak was a far more serious one than it was made out to be," said an official associated with the survey. It also mentions that more than 500 people have died annually due to acute encephalitis between 2008 and 2012.
    ...
A citizens' report on environment and health, compiled by an NGO, has indicated that the dengue death figure in the state last year was fudged.

    Comment - West Bengal has reported the following official encephalitis fatalities;
    2008: 1
    2009: 10
    2010: 0
    2011: 61
    2012: 53
While I expected that some under-reporting was going on, I am staggered by the magnitude of the dishonesty from the state. This latest report suggests that each confirmed death represents 19 others that are unreported officially.- Ro

The drinking water in the area is largely contaminated with iron and arsenic http://jcbsc.org/journal/Paper/Vol_3_I_1_2012/D8.pdf In 2010 only 26% of the town had access to piped, chlorinated water. Priti Nath Jha, TNN | May 3, 2013, 04.00 AM IST

MUZAFFARPUR: DMAnupam Kumar on Thursday said that acute encephalitis (AES) is under control and there is no need to panic for it. He offered all government help to children suffering from AES and admitted to both government and private hospitals.

Explaining various measures taken by the district administration to fight AES, the DM told newsmen that the disease is basically related to temperature and malnutrition as it appears only during summer among poor rural families. He said the foremost need of the hour is the publicity of guidelines for proper first aid to suffering children by family members and to carry the children to the nearest. The government is ready to meet the cost of the transport also, he said.

                            ....

On the other hand, the civil surgeon said officially, only one case of AES has been confirmed so far and it was the patient who died in SK Medical College Hospital. Altogether, 12 patients with AES symptoms have been admitted in the last 27 days here. Of them, eight were admitted to SKMCH and the rest four in Kejriwal private nursing home.
DM Anupam Kumar on Thursday said that acute encephalitis (AES) is under control and there is no need to panic for it.
