      Jammu, Jun 14 (PTI) A teenager was washed away in flash floods triggered by rains in Poonch border district of Jammu and Kashmir.

      18-year-old Bashir Ahmed was taking bath in Loran river in Battal Kota area of the district this morning when flash floods triggered by rains in upper hills washed him away, a police officer said.

        DEHRADUN: Five more bodies were recovered on Monday from near the Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath, taking the toll in the torrential rain lashing Uttarakhand to 13 even as the chardham yatra remained suspended for the second day due to landslides.

        Authorities in Chamoli district said the toll may climb as about 50 people from different villages in the area are missing and rescue operations are on.

            RISHIKESH: Torrential rains and flash floods washed away homes and roads in north India, leaving at least feared 73 people dead and thousands stranded, as the annual monsoon hit the country earlier than normal, officials said Tuesday.

            Authorities called in military helicopters to try to rescue residents and pilgrims cut off by rising rivers and landslides triggered by more than three days of rain in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, officials said.

              DEHRADUN/SHIMLA: The famous Kedarnath shrine was virtually submerged in mud and slush where 50 people died in the unprecedented flash floods that claimed over 130 lives in Uttarkhand and Himachal Pradesh and over 70,000 pilgrims for Himalayan shrines stranded.

              The shrine, one of the four holy dhams, in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand bore the brunt of torrential rains. About 500 people, including several pilgrims, are said to be missing in the area.

                      Uttarakhand floods: 40 bodies found in Haridwar, toll rises to 190PTI : Dehradun, Fri Jun 21 2013, 15:53 hrs

                      Forty bodies of flood victims were today recovered from Haridwar, taking the toll in the rain fury to 190 as operations to rescue over 9000 stranded in Kedarnath and Badrinath were stepped up with the deployment of 40 helicopters.

                          The death toll in the massive floods caused by the heavy monsoon showers in Himachal Pradesh went up to 20 following the recovery of six more bodies from the debris of a collapsed house in Kinnaur district on Thursday.

                          The double storied house belonging to Vinay Charas collapsed when the family was fast asleep slept on the intervening night of Sunday. In fact, the driving rain that lashed the state was particularly severe on the residents of Chaugaon village near the Hindustan-Tibet road.

                              Monsoon fury claims one more life

                              Monsoon-related death toll here rose to six with the drowning of a person in a narrow watercourse at Malappattam here late night on June 19.

                              The deceased has been identified as T. Rajan (49). He accidentally fell into the flowing water from a culvert across it at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday when he was on his way to his house at Chooliyat near Malappattam under the Mayyil police station limits. He was a worker in a rubber-tapping unit.

                              Excess rainfall claims 23 lives in Kerala

                              The excess rainfall since the onset of monsoon in Kerala on June 1 has claimed 23 lives and damaged properties worth crores of rupees in 374 villages across the state, the state government said here Friday.

                              Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Friday held a meeting with revenue officials and directed the district collectors to start distributing the compensation money to all those affected.

                              "It has been decided to give free ration to all the affected people who are now living in relief camps. Each family would be given Rs.2,000, food and medicines," Chandy said after the meeting.
