Rat fever claims another life in Dakshina Kannada

With Dakshina Kannada recording its second death this year due to leptospirosis (rat fever), health authorities have asked farmers and those working with animals, slaughterhouses and sewage workers and lorry drivers to be extra careful.
Coastal areas and Malnad region are prone to the disease because of temperature, soil salinity and high rainfall and stagnating water, according to B. V Rajesh, District Surveillance Officer.
Premalatha, a 33-year-old woman from Belthangady died due to complications arising from leptospirosis on Sunday, taking the toll to two in the district. The first death in the district was of one Jayaram, a plumber from Sullia, who died due to leptospirosis in June this year in Mangalore.

MANGALORE : District Surveillance Officer Dr BV Rajesh has informed that a team of expert doctors including health officials have visited Piligodu in Belthangady Taluk where two women have died reportedly due to rat fever.
Dr Rajesh said the team was in the village for 39 hours and had examined as many as 609 people but did not find anyone suffering from the disease. One of the members of the team said there was little chance of one of the deceased Premalatha having contracted rat fever as she had remained indoors since three months and moreover none of her family members too have suffered from fever.

Mangalore, Nov 12: 48 year-old Abdul Rahman from Thotabengre on the outskirts of the city succumbed to leptospirosis (rat fever) at a private hospital here on Monday.
He reported fever and was admitted at a private hospital three days ago.
He is survived by his wife and four children. He was a daily wage worker by profession.
Leptospirosis, called rat fever in common parlance, is endemic mostly in the rural areas of the district.

Rat fever claims third victim

Abdul Rahiman, a resident of Bengre, died of leptospirosis at a private hospital on Monday, taking the total number deaths due to the disease to three in the district. The patient had fever, renal failure and pulmonary haemorrhage.
The other two deaths were one each from Sullia and from Belthangady. Officials said there have been 127 positive leptospirosis cases this year. Last year, there were 196 cases and three deaths.
