    Dominica confirms 1st case of Chikungunya virus

    The Ministry of Health has confirmed the first case of the Chikungunya virus on the island.

    Chikungunya is a viral disease, carried mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and causes a dengue-like sickness.

    ?We can confirm now that we have the first locally occurring case of Chikungunya in Dominica. It?s a female individual who had a travel history of travelling to St Martin,? chief medical officer, Dr David Johnson confirmed to members of the press on Thursday, January 16, 2014.

    According to Dr Johnson, the person presented the signs and symptoms of the disease in mid-December, after conducting tests; they received confirmation from CARPHA last night.

    The first case, a Good Hope resident, has reportedly recovered from the disease.

    Dr Johnson emphasized however that there is ?no cause for alarm or scare? at this time in Dominica as the Ministry of Health is taking proactive measures to ensure that there are no more cases of the disease.

    Three more confirmed cases of Chikungunya disease

    Health officials have confirmed three more cases of the Chikungunya disease in Dominica.

    There is now a total of four confirmed cases of the disease on the island.

    Acting senior environmental health officer Clement Marcellin, confirmed the three cases on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.

    The island confirmed its first imported case of the disease on January 16, 2014. The infected person had a history of traveling to St Martin, according to officials.

    Chikungunya is a viral disease that is spread by Aedes Aegypti, which also transmits dengue virus, and the Aedes Albopictus mosquitos.

      The new confirmed cases are from the Health Districts of Marigot, Castle Bruce and Roseau, health officials said on Tuesday afternoon, adding they are all local transmissions.

        Another case of Chikungunya

        The Environmental Health Department has confirmed another case of Chikungunya.

        There is now a total of four confirmed cases of the disease on the island.

        Senior Environmental Health Officer, Sylvester St. Ville confirmed to Dominica News Online of the new case on Monday.

        “We have one new case in Bath Estate,” he said.

        So far there have been confirmed cases of the disease in Health Districts of Marigot, Castle Bruce and Roseau.

        On January 16, 2014, the Ministry of Health reported its first (imported) case by an individual who travelled from the island of St. Martin in December, 2013.

          Thirteen cases of Chikungunya in Dominica

          There is now a total of 13 confirmed cases of of the mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya, in Dominica.

          Senior Environmental Health Officer, Sylvester St. Ville made the announcement on state-owned DBS Radio on Friday and said the matter is disturbing.

          “It’s a major concern for the health care system but it’s something that we are trying to manage,” he said. “As of our latest report, there are 13 confirmed cases.”

          He said the cases are mainly in the Woodfordhill and Bath Estate areas. “They are confined to those two communities,” he remarked.

          St. Ville pointed out that the Environmental Health department is currently undertaking preventative measures to reduce the spread the disease.

          “Presently we are in Bath Estate doing some source reduction and vector control activities …this evening (Friday) we will be doing some fogging operations to reduce the population of adults in these communities,” he pointed out.

            Thirty cases of Chikungunya in Dominica

            There are now 30 cases of the mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya in Dominica.

            Health officials revealed the latest figure at a press conference on Friday afternoon.

            Although the disease was earlier found in two locations, officials say it is now spreading all over the island.

            Visiting entomologist Dr. Durland Fish has warned the disease could become pandemic if it is not halted in its track.

              Thirty-One Confirmed Cases of Chikungunya on Island

              The Ministry of Health in Dominica on Friday February 14th, 2014 confirmed thirty-one(31) cases of the Chikungunya disease on the island.

              Chikungunya which is an infection, causes an illness with a similar mode of transmission as dengue fever. Chikungunya is a viral disease, carried mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and causes a dengue-like sickness.

              Symptoms of the disease includes a sudden high fever, severe pain in the wrists, ankles or knuckles, muscle pain, headache, nausea, and rash. Joint pain and stiffness are more common symptoms associated with the Chikungunya disease which is not associated with dengue.

              Chief medical officer Dr. David Johnson in a conference on Friday has confirmed the thirty-one(31) cases.

              The main areas where the disease is located are WoodFord Hill and Bath Estate Officials have indicated.

                      Over 2,000 reported cases of Chikungunya in Dominica

                      Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr David Johnson has reported a significant increase in the cases of Chikungunya on the island.

                      According to the CMO, Dominica now has 2,139 reported cases of the mosquito-borne disease but there is more because not everyone reports to a health facility.

                      ?We know that everybody who has the disease don?t report to the health care facilities. Two weeks ago we had recorded in Dominica 1,959 cases of Chikungunya and that is from the time of the outbreak to then,? he told state-owned DBS radio. ?Now that number has increased by another 200, so we talking about 2,139 cases we have reported.?

                      He added that cases are reported on a daily basis and the numbers keep changing.

                      Johnson also noted that the biggest issue in combating the disease is a myth among the public that the virus is not being spread by mosquitos.
