  • Egypt - 2 deaths, 1 confirmed H1N1pdm09, the other birdflu? case - health official Assiut governorate - January 22, 2014 - MoH denies

    Wed, 22/01/2014 - 17:58

Dr. Ahmed Abdel Hamid, undersecretary of the Health Ministry in Assiut, said the bird flu could be the cause of two deaths.

The Chest Hospital received the body of Mohamed Refaat, 25, suspected to have died of bird flu. “We took samples from his family to determine the cause of death,” he explained.

Another similar case was Nabahat Hussein Abdel Hakim, 31, who was taken to the Chest Hospital and given Tamiflu for treatment.

      Re: Egypt - 2 deaths suspected H5N1 bird flu cases - Assiut governorate - January 22, 2014

Yesterday I saw 4 or 5 reports on the flu cases in Assiut, they were reported as "bird flu H1N1".
It happens rather often: the novel H1N1 stated as "bird flu" in arab language sources.

So I assumed it is seasonal H1N1 influenza.

      For instance:

This looks like the 2nd time in a week that a govenorate health official has declared a possible or confirmed H5N1 case and the national MoH has denied.

It is my experience that H1N1 cases are identified as "swine", "pigs", "pigs birds", or H1N1 in the machine translations.

The picture that accompanies the article is of a chicken which implies this is an article about suspected H5N1 cases.

The Ministry of Health and Population denied Thursday that two people died in Assiut of bird flu.

The ministry pointed out that the two people suffered from acute inflammation in the respiratory system.

The statement added that a patient died on arrival to the Assiut University Hospital and the other was transferred to Assiut chest hospital.

Ahmed Abdel Hamid, undersecretary of the Health Ministry in Assiut, had said Wednesday the chest hospital received the body of Mohamed Refaat, 25, suspected to have died of bird flu. “We took samples from his family to determine the cause of death,” he explained.

Ahmed Kamel, media adviser to the Ministry of Health, meanwhile said Thursday that the analysis of samples did not show bird flu infection.

Kamel added that the last bird flu infection in Egypt was recorded in April 2013 in Sohag Governorate.

I think the current murky political situation is making disease surveillance very uncertain as the crack down on the press continues:

from Zenobia, long time Egyptian blogger, January 22, 2014:

"I do not know what kind of democracy they are speaking about when thousands of young protesters are arrested and awarded wining journalists are arrested and treated like criminals in prisons."

A blog about Egypt and the Middle East as well as Egyptian affairs including politics and history

from Amnesty International on January 23, 2014:

?There is a concerted effort underway to squeeze out any independent observers from activists, to journalists to nongovernmental organizations. This is a deliberate attempt to make it more difficult for them to operate in Egypt and continue their work documenting and reporting on state abuses,? said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
The authorities have also sought to use the criminal justice system as a tool of repression.
?The judiciary is being used to punish government opponents while allowing perpetrators of human rights violations to walk free,? said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.

With elections just over I think the government wants to appear to be 'in charge'. A deadly disease outbreak would not look good. Also, possibly contaminated chicken would wreck havoc with food security. Lastly, it would have a negative impact on the local stock exchange. None of which would endear the newly elected government with the people of Egypt.
Please do not ask me for medical advice, I am not a medical doctor.
