Indonesian teenager dies of bird flu

JAKARTA, June 1 (Reuters) - An Indonesian girl from Central Java has died of bird flu, a health ministry official said on Friday.

The girl, 15, from the Kendal area near the city of Semarang, died on Tuesday, Muhammad Nadirin of the ministry's bird flu centre said by telephone.

"She was handling a dead chicken which she was preparing to cook," the official said.

The girl's death takes the human death toll from the H5N1 virus to 79 in Indonesia, the highest in the world. There have been 99 human cases of the disease in the Southeast Asian country.

Including the latest death, there have been 188 deaths globally and 310 known infections in total, according to data from the World Health Organisation.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way humans become infected with bird flu.

The disease is endemic in bird populations in most parts of Indonesia, where millions of backyard fowl are kept in close proximity to humans and where education campaigns often do not reach more remote areas.

For the moment, it remains largely a disease in birds but scientists are worried about the virus's persistence and ability to adapt to new environments and hosts.

Scientists say H5N1 is a global threat because the virus could mutate into form that passes easily between people, triggering a pandemic in which millions could die.

JAKARTA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- A 15 year-old Indonesian girl, who died on Tuesday in Central Java, was positively infected by avian influenza, putting the death toll to 79 out of 99 cases, Health Ministry said here on Friday.

Bird flu has claimed the lives of a 15-year-old girl from Kendal regency and a 40-year-old man from Grobogan regency, both in Central Java, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 79.


Indonesia has the highest number of fatalities resulting from the H5N1 bird flu virus in the world.


Muhammad Nadirin, of the Health Ministry's bird flu center, said the girl from Kendal regency died Tuesday, four days after being admitted to a hospital.


"She had been handling a dead chicken, which she was preparing to cook," the official told Reuters by phone.


He said four of the six chickens at her home died suddenly on May 12, AFP reported, and one of the dead chickens was cooked and eaten by the victim.


Contact with sick birds is the most common way that humans contract the bird flu virus.


In most parts of the country, the disease is endemic in bird populations. In many homes, backyard fowl are kept in close range to humans. Educational campaigns have yet to reach remote locations.


In Grobogan regency, a 40-year-old male resident of Ringinharjo village, in Gubug district, reportedly died from the H5N1 virus.


The man died Monday at Moewardi hospital in Surakarta after two days of treatment.

The death was confirmed on the World Health Organization website Thursday.


Head of the Grobogan regency health office, Palty Siregar, said Thursday lab results from the Health Ministry confirmed the man tested positive for the virus.


It is believed he contracted the virus after some 400 chickens in the village suddenly died two weeks ago.


He said the team also tested a Gubug community health center official who was treating the man.


Initial tests usually take a day or two to confirm, while more detailed tests by government laboratories or those affiliated with the WHO can take a week or longer.


These latest cases prompted the husbandry office in Grobogan to launch a mass cull of chickens in the village on Thursday and Friday, Palty said.


The government had hoped to stop human fatalities from the virus this year and banned the popular practice of keeping backyard poultry in Jakarta.


Officials have started distributing kits containing masks, gloves and bars of soap in a new initiative to fight the virus.


Around 100,000 village leaders will receive the kits, which also contain educational material about the virus, urging them to take precautions when handling poultry, AFP reported. The first kits were handed out this week in Tenggulun Timur village -- a high-risk area in West Java, officials said.
