History Keeping record of countries affected

I'm planning to keep track of the outbreaks, country by country, for both humans and birds, and produce it in graphic form weekly to post here. To get the ball rolling, I've been gathering information about the outbreaks that I know about so far - mainly from the Reuters site. I've shown it in the table below, using the same colour-scheme that Heather is using for the Flu-Wiki reports. Some of the information is missing, I know, and some is out-of-date, but it's the best that I could find.

Can people please send me corrections and omissions , so that I can get it up-to-date . I'm using data that has been lab-confirmed only.

Thanks

.

Post Re: Keeping record of countries affected

Here's the latest chart, to April 06 . It's difficult keeping up with the records, but there appear to have been 5 new countries infected with either human or animal cases this week:
Burkina Faso
Jordan
Switzerland
Ukraine
United Kingdom

and three human deaths - Egypt, Azerbaijan, Cambodia.
The columns are
- white - data at 30 March
- yellow - data at 6 April
- orange - change in the week.

Susie-
You would like this site for animal reports,- www.Promedmail.org
current page-
http://www.promedmail.org/pls/promed...681385613:::::
The reports tend to be for a recent time period instead of a total. Here are some numbers I have snipped-

In Germany for 2006-So far in 2006, 5334 wild birds have been handed
over to the Bavarian Agency for Health and Food
Safety; 4655 of them have already [by 7 Apr 2006]
been tested for influenza A, and the 71 samples that were influenza A positive

In Denmark-Since 14 Mar 2006, when the first H5N1-positive
case was detected in Denmark, a total of 39
positive cases have been confirmed.

One hundred and one cases of the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain have been detected in Austria since the virus first surfaced in mid February, In total, more than 2,100 specimen were tested since the virus first appeared on Feb. 14, the Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.
The tests, carried out by a laboratory in the Lower Austrian town of Moedling, determined the strain in 59 swans, 27 ducks, six chickens, four water fowl, two geese, one coot, one seagull and one egret, ORF said. Vienna tops the list of affected areas with 40 cases.

France-
End of this report period: 28 Mar 2006.
Identification of agent: highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1.
Date of start of the event: 13 Feb 2006.
New outbreaks: In Ain, there have been 25 cases reported.

Affected population: Outbreaks in Marlieux,
Birieux, Villars les Dombes, Versailleux and
Lapeyrouse: wild swans (_Cygnus cygnus_) and mute
swans (_Cygnus olor_). Outbreak in Chanoz
Chatenay: a common pochard. Outbreak in Divonne
les Bains: a great crested grebe.
An interesting detail to note is the virus
isolated is still the Qinghai Lake type

Swizerland- There are currently 28 more cases (wild
birds) positive for H5.

Russia -"Last year [2005] we lost 662 000 head of
poultry, which died or were slaughtered. This
year (so far) the figure is 1.3 million poultry," ( 1.1 million fron infection, 200,000 from culling)
Sergei Dankvert told a press briefing on the
sidelines of a veterinarians' conference. He
noted that twice as many farm fowl had been
culled or died so far this year [2006] compared
with all of 2005.

Avian influenza in Cambodia

Information received on 13 Apr 2006 from Dr Sen Sovann, Deputy
Director, Department of Animal Health and Production (DAHP), Phnom
Penh:

deaths: 402
destroyed: 200
Affected population: backyard chickens.

2. Kamakor village,
deaths: 76
destroyed: 171
Affected population: backyard ducks and free-ranging ducks.

Nigeria-
All the farms are commercial backyard layer
production units, except for a farm at Bauchi
(see table above) which is non-commercial and had
a mixture of 38 susceptible ornamental birds (10
ostriches, 18 emus, 1 turkey, 2 guineafowl, 2
Chinese geese and 5 black-crowned cranes).

Laboratory where diagnostic tests were performed:
National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom,
Nigeria

Results: haemagglutination test; agar gel
immunodiffusion test; virus isolation; RT-PCR
were all positive.

Israel-
Identification of agent: highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1.
Date of start of the event: 16 Mar 2006.
New outbreaks: 2 in Jerusalem (30 000 birds) and HaDarom (20 000 birds).

Susie - congrads on the moderator staus -
I have a 2 suggestions if you can do this:

1 - add a column for percentage of human death rate
2 - create a graph over time of this data )as far back as you can go). Visuals are always more impactful.
I think that graph will make jaws drop.
