South Korea reports new low pathogenic [H7] bird flu case
South Korea reports new low pathogenic bird flu case
Fri Nov 23, 2007 9:35pm EST
|
SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's agriculture ministry said on Saturday it had discovered less virulent strain of bird flu at a poultry farm in the south west of the country.
The ministry plans to cull 13,000 fowl, including 3,800 ducks infected by the virus, in a bid to prevent the spread of the strain of bird flu.
The latest case occurred at a poultry farm in Gwangju, South Jeolla province, about 250 km from Seoul.
South Korea has had seven outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu from last November to March, spending 58.2 billion won ($62.56 million) in quarantine. http://www.reuters.com/article/healt...ame=healthNews

Thie is a repeat of last year. Qinghai H5N1 will be announced soon in South Korea, followed by H5N1 in Japan.

SKorea confirms first bird flu outbreak in 8 months
By JAE-SOON CHANG
Associated Press Writer
| SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- A bird flu outbreak has struck a duck farm in southern South Korea - the first outbreak in eight months - but the deadly H5N1 virus was not involved, the Agriculture Ministry said Saturday.
Quarantine workers have slaughtered about 17,000 ducks at a farm in Gwangju, about 330 kilometers (205 miles) southwest of Seoul, said a ministry official on customary condition of anonymity citing office policy.
The virus that caused the latest outbreak is the H7 type that is "low pathogenic" and does not spread to humans, the official said.
It was the first bird flu outbreak in South Korea since March.
Between November last year and March, seven outbreaks hit poultry farms across South Korea, resulting in the slaughter of about 2.8 million birds. All cases involved the lethal H5N1 virus.
In June, the country declared itself free of bird flu under regulations of the World Organization for Animal Health, as there were no new outbreaks in the previous three months.
The latest outbreak does not affect South Korea's status as bird flu-free country as it involves a "low pathogenic" virus, the ministry official said.
The deadly H5N1 virus began circulating widely in late 2003, and hundreds of millions of birds have either died or been slaughtered because of the virus. The strain has killed 206 people worldwide, according to the WHO.

Japan halts SKorean poultry imports over bird flu outbreak
| TOKYO (AP) -- Japan has temporarily halted poultry imports from South Korea following a bird flu outbreak among ducks in that country, the Japanese Agriculture Ministry said Monday.
The ministry said the measure was taken as a precaution to protect domestic birds.
The latest outbreak in South Korea - the first since March - involved "low pathogenic" H7 strain, which has not been known to spread to humans, not the deadly H5N1 strain, but quarantine workers slaughtered about 17,000 ducks at a farm in Gwangju, about 330 kilometers (205 miles) southwest of the capital.
Tokyo has also asked Seoul for more details about the outbreak.
Japan lifted in July its earlier ban on South Korean poultry imports following a previous bird flu outbreak a year ago. Japan imported less than 1,300 metric tons chicken - only 0.2 percent of Japanese consumption - from South Korea in 2006, the Agriculture Ministry said.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed or led to the slaughter of millions of birds in recent years. It remains difficult for humans to catch, but has killed at least 206 people worldwide since 2003, according to the World Health Organization.

H7 is readily passed to humans and has been documented for H7 outbreaks in the Netherlands (where one died), British Columbia, and England.
Reporting in popular press is heading south.

Re: South Korea reports new low pathogenic [H7] bird flu case
some snips from OIE-report
Date of confirmation of event 23/11/2007
Causal agent Low pathogenic avian influenza virus
Serotype H7N8
Epidemiological comments :
As part of the national serological surveillance for avian influenza in the Republic of Korea, 2007/2008, the Korean Government has conducted tests against avian influenza virus on duck-raising farms across the country.
Avian influenza virus was isolated from pooled fecal samples collected from a duck-raising farm in Kwangju-Jikhalsi, south-western part of the Republic of Korea.
The virus was proved to be low pathogenic avian influenza virus serotype H7N8, but according to the Korean avian influenza emergency action plan, 19,200 ducklings in the affected farm and the three 3 neighbouring farms were stamped out.

There are not many H7N8 sequences at Genbank, but they are all from wild birds. The relationship between the N8 in H7N8 in Korea and N8 in H3N8 equine isolates in Mongolia and China may be of interest.

Only 3 N8's from H7N8 isolate at Genbank and the N8 from Ohio is most closely related to N8 from wild birds

The above comments from the recent OIE report indicate the serotype of the H7 reported in South Korea was H7N8. There are only a few H7N8 isolates listed at Genbank, and all are from wild birds. The N8 from the public sequences is most closely related to N8 isolates from wild birds also. Only one of the H7N8 isolates is from Asia, which originated in a swan in Japan in 1999. The location (see satellite map) in South Korea is closely to migration paths.
Recently there have been H3N8 outbreaks in Mongolia and China. Wild birds migrate from Mongolia to South Korea at this time of the year. In the spring of 2005, H7 was reported in North Korea.
The sequences from the H7N8 outbreak would be useful.
