WARSAW, Poland: Two turkeys at a poultry farm in central Poland have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, authorities said Saturday. It is the country's first reported case of the deadly virus in domestic livestock.
The outbreak occurred on a turkey farm near the city of Plock, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Warsaw, said deputy chief state veterinarian Krzysztof Jazdzewski.
Initial tests indicate the H5N1 strain of the virus, and samples have been sent to the State Veterinary Institute in Pulawy for final confirmation, Jazdzewski added.
Authorities ordered farmers to keep poultry indoors and launched inspections of farms within three kilometers (2 miles) of the outbreak.
Speaking with reporters in Gdansk, Prime Minister Donald Tusk assured Poles there was "no reason to panic."
The H5N1 strain was first detected in Poland in wild swans last year.
The disease has ravaged poultry stocks in Asia, and scientists believe it spread to Europe and to Africa with migratory wild birds.
Though bird flu is difficult for people to catch, it has killed at least 206 people worldwide. Experts believe most victims were probably infected through direct contact with sick birds. In Europe, human cases have been recorded in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

"The Polish authorities notified us in the middle of the night about a strong suspicion of bird flu," European Commission spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich told Reuters.
"We have been in contact with them since then, they are now taking the appropriate measures."

WARSAW, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Poland's veterinary service has culled 4,200 turkeys following an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu on two poultry farms northwest of Warsaw, officials said on Sunday.
"The turkeys were gassed on Saturday night and the destruction of their carcasses is due to end on Sunday," PAP news agency reported district crisis-management chief Hilary Januszcyzk as saying.
He added that no new cases had been detected so far.
Two turkey farms in the Plock area, some 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Warsaw, were cordoned off after the outbreak was discovered and routine precautions were carried out.
Poland's chief veterinary officer said Lithuania had not banned Polish poultry imports.
"I was told by the head of Lithuania's Food and Veterinary Service, Kazimieras Lukauskas, that no such ban had been introduced," Ewa Lech told PAP news agency.
"They are waiting for a decision from the European Commission and will abide by the principles accepted in the EU."
Earlier, Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki expressed surprise at reports that Lithuania had banned poultry imports from Poland following Saturday's outbreak.
Poland and Lithuania have been EU members since May 2004.
Sawicki said the poultry-farm owners whose stocks had been destroyed would be compensated at current retail prices.
Migrating ducks, geese or swans most likely brought the bird flu virus to Poland, officials have said. Poland's previous bird flu outbreak was in wild swans in the northern city of Torun in 2006.
