Indonesian man dies of bird flu
|
| JAKARTA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A 47-year-old Indonesian man has died of bird flu, bringing the country's death toll from the virulent disease to 93, a hospital official said Friday.
The official, in charge at a bird flu-designed hospital of Persahabatan in East Jakarta who gave the name only as Zulsiah, said the man died on Thursday following three days of treatment for avian influenza.
The man had been treated in the hospital with fever, difficulty in breathing and cough since Monday, after he was shifted from hospitals in Tanggerang city on the outskirts of Jakarta, said Joko Suyonoanother, official from the anti-bird flu center of the health ministry.
Laboratories tests showed the man was positively infected by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, said Suyono.
There were 115 infected cases in the hardest-hit country, with 93 fatalities. Although millions of chickens have been culled, the virus is now still endemic in poultry across the world's fourth most populous country.
Indonesia has grappled with difficulties in stopping the spread of the virus, including sprawling territory, the traditional way of raising chickens in the backyard and ineffective implementation of anti-disease regulations.
If the virus could mutate to a level capable of transmitting among humans, millions of lives would be put at risk and the world economy would suffer setbacks, experts warned.

Indonesian death toll from bird flu climbs to 93, after man dies of virus
JAKARTA (AP): An Indonesian man died of bird flu, bringing the death toll in the country worst hit by the virus to 93, a Health Ministry official said Friday.
Authorities were trying to ascertain how the 47-year-old man contracted the deadly H5N1 strain of the disease, which has infected 115 people in Indonesia.
The man began showing signs of illness on Dec. 2 and died Thursday night at a hospital in the capital, Jakarta, after being admitted with a fever, cough and other flu-like symptoms, said spokesman Joko Suyono.
He lived in the industrial town of Tangerang, 40 kilometers west of Jakarta.
Indonesia has recorded regular deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003 and its 93 deaths now account for almost half of the recorded fatalities worldwide, according to figures from the World Health Organization.
Almost all cases have originated from sick poultry, but experts fear it will mutate into a strain that can pass more easily from human to human. Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens, is a potential hotspot for a global bird flu pandemic, scientists have warned. (***)

Re: Indonesian Human Cases Dec 4th +
JAKARTA: A 47-year-old Indonesian man has died of bird flu in the capital Jakarta, bringing the toll in the nation worst hit by the H5N1 virus to 93, the health ministry said on Friday.
Muhammad Nadhirin from the ministry's bird flu information centre told reporters that the patient, who had earlier been confirmed as infected with the highly pathogenic virus, had died Thursday evening in hospital in Jakarta.
He was first admitted to a private hospital there on December 5, three days after he fell ill, and was transferred to Jakarta on December 10.
The source of transmission of the virus to the man, who kept ducks at his home in the satellite town of Tangerang -- where five bird flu deaths have now been reported since October -- remained unknown, Nadhirin said.
A woman from Tangerang died of bird flu on Monday. "All the specimens in the neighbourhoods of both victims tested by the agriculture ministry were negative. The 76 specimens taken from the two areas showed negative results," he told reporters.
The virus is usually transmitted to humans from infected birds, but scientists fear it could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, sparking a global pandemic that could kill millions.

Without hand held testers those simptoms in the very begining can point to anything, from "new ebola" to respiratory infections.
Maybe (without deployed bf hand testers in the plans), the ER, and the dedicated hospitals, will be the "canarian flags" for the H2H2H emerging infections?

Re: Indonesian Human Cases Dec 4th +
It's a dangerous game speculate that gastro-intestinal involvement during an H5N1 human infection could signal the emergence of a novel ''ebola-like'' bird flu strain. Or a recombinant bird-flu-EBOV strain.
In the past, most cases of bird flu in Vietnam and other places denoted a systemic infection by H5N1, with symptom as vomit, diarrhea, headache with no upper respiratory tract acute symptoms, but progression toward multi-organ failure.

No, nausea is not a new symptom. We have seen all kinds of symptoms reported over the last few years; diarrhea, nausea, conjunctivitis, high temps, shortness of breath, lately sore throats, and of course the aches and pains typical. We also see brain inflammation (reported as encephalitis) sometimes.

Another symptom can be bleeding from the mouth when seen with most of the others above.
Also, a lack of oxygen to the tissues can produce a purplish coloring on the skin (late stages).

Indonesia investigating suspicious bird flu cases: official
AFP - Tue Dec 18, 6:31 AM ET
JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesian bird flu officials said Tuesday they were investigating several recent avian influenza deaths where the victims were believed to have not come into contact with infected poultry.
"In the last three to four months, we have had four cases where the poultry in the victim's neighbourhoods (tested) negative for the virus," said Bayu Krisnamurthi, head of Indonesia's National Avian Influenza Committee.
"The number is significant enough for us to intensify our investigations so that we could have a more accurate explanation," he told a press briefing giving an overview of what has happened in Indonesia this year with bird flu.
"Some 20 percent of confirmed cases in 2006 were inconclusive, meaning there was no direct contact with poultry. This year (2007) the figure has been raised to 30 percent," he added.
The bird flu virus is usually transmitted to humans from infected birds, but scientists fear it could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, sparking a global pandemic that could kill millions.
Krisnamurthi nevertheless insisted that Indonesia had made progress in tackling bird flu, with the number of reported cases decreasing this year.
In 2007, 40 cases were confirmed with 35 fatalities, compared to figures of 55 and 45, respectively, in 2006.
But he also conceded that Indonesia needed more effective measures, particularly to combat bird flu in poultry.
According to Krisnamurthi, even though the agriculture ministry vaccinated 70 percent of the country's farmed poultry in 2007, "the quality of the vaccine must be improved," he said.
Indonesia has recorded a total of 115 confirmed bird flu cases, 93 of which resulted in death.

www.chinaview.cn 2007-12-21
JAKARTA, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Five people including two children were admitted to a bird flu specialist hospital in Jakarta Friday, raising concerns that human cases of the disease could grow to a record 119 in an individual country.
The five patients were transferred to the Persahabatan Hospital here from a small hospital in the town of Serang in Banten province after they showed clear signs of bird flu symptoms, such as respiratory problems, heavy coughs and high fever.
The national Antara news agency said the bird flu suspicions arose after health officials learned that 60 chickens and ducks in their village died from the virus as confirmed by laboratory tests.
Contact with infected chickens is the most common cause of bird flu in human in Indonesia, where 92 people died from the H5N1 virus, the highest among bird-flu affected countries.
The five patients, aged between 8 and 30, are from the same extended family.
