Default Swahili - Kiswahili - news/language resources

One day, we may need some foreign language resources. It may also be that local news in the local languages carry important articles thay may never make it to English media.

So, here are some resources:

The Swahili - Kiswahili Language

From Wikipedia:

Swahili (called Kiswahili in the language itself) is the mother tongue of the Swahili people (Waswahili), who inhabit several large stretches of the Indian Ocean coastline from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique.[2] Although only 5-10 million people speak it as their native language[1], Swahili is a lingua franca of much of East Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a national or official language of four nations, and is the only African language among the official working languages of the African Union. Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo DRC, Somalia, Comoros Islands (including Mayotte), Mozambique.

At the end of the Wikipedia article, there are a number of useful dictionary resources links.

United Nations Radio in Kiswahili:

http://www.un.org/radio/sw/

It may be late on current news (latest today is dated 7 December 2007), however it may be updated more frequently if there were a pandemic (of whatever virus). For example, for the moment, it has only one story dated 14 September 2007 about Ebola in the DR of Congo.

Search word:

Swahili:
avian influenza: mafua ya ndege

and here is a leaflet describing avian influenza and usual recommendations about how to wash hands etc. (This one originates from a NGO in Switzerland)

http://www.icmh.ch/WebPDF/avian%20flu/avian%20public%20Swahili%20-%2021-4-06%20logo.pdf

And another leaflet about avian influenza, this one originates from the Chief Medical Officer in Wales (United Kingdom)
http://new.wales.gov.uk/docrepos/403...wahili?lang=en

And it looks like this very leaflet has also been translated in the following languages:

Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Spanish, Chinese, Czech, Gujarati, Hindi, Kurdish, Polish, Russian, Somali, Swahili (above), Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese

Faransa, Sorani, Langala, Reno - (I don't know what countries correspond to these languages).

Thank you FrenchieGirl!!! Very valuable. I went to the site http://new.wales.gov.uk/docrepos, but could not access leaflets in other languages. Do you have a link to the complete list? I was also hoping to read the leaflet in English to evaluate the content.

Default Re: news/language resources - multilingual

Hi Farmer,

The English leaflet is here, it's your usual leaflet describing BF, not too badly done at that. By posting what I could find in other languages, for bird flu or other pandemic candidates, I was hoping to build a sort of information library for those countries which lack official information from their governments. Also, to facilitate their Internet search, whenever the need is felt, say, someone searching in Google "avian influenza urdu" or "bird flu punjabi", they would find whatever decent information I can collect on Flutrackers.

So, English leaflet:
http://new.wales.gov.uk/docrepos/403...eaflet?lang=en

Other languages, I have posted some already on other threads/countries concerned. Don't know if I'll have time to compile them all this afternoon, or very soon, for that matter, as it does entail not just replacing the language in the url, but understanding one or two things; such as, since yesterday, I found that Lingala (not Langala) is an African language spoken in both Congos. Or, other example, that "kifaransa" actually means "French" in Swahili!!! And all that on top of my (regular) job... and not always on my computer and sometimes between two planes...

Otherwise, just click on my handle, and find all my messages, the most recent ones contain the other languages links.
