Re: EGYPT - Jan 9, 2008+
Here's my Egypt list for today. At this point in time, it's just a "guesstimation" of suspected cases in Egypt -- the reports over the last couple of days have been confusing and chaotic to say the least.
Having said that...
My current count: 5 confirmed cases PLUS 167 (247) suspected cases PLUS 1 suspected death PLUS 87+ negatives = 260+ (340+)
There's a wide range of numbers here because there have been so many reports of suspected cases and negative results that have had no names attached.
Some news blurbs from today:
- "to exceed the number of detainees in different governorates 55 cases of suspicion" [so, currently there are 55+ suspected cases in various governorates]
- one report said there were 27 new suspected cases today
- one report said there were 33 negatives reported today
- about some suspected case from Al Gharbiyah: "The central laboratories has shown some positive samples taken from them." Not sure what that means. ?? Positive rapid flu tests? Positive first round of H5N1 tests? No idea.
- the woman who fled the hospital in Sohag is pregnant -- they're not sure where she's from -- she may have just been visiting the area and has returned home [wherever that is]
- one report mentioned that since Nov 2007, 400 samples from people and 6,000 samples from birds have tested negative.
Note that I have removed "old" negatives from the list -- only the newly reported negatives are on the list. All are in my count, though.
Note, also, that the dates below are news report dates, not admission dates.

Re: EGYPT - Jan 9, 2008+
| Egypt Warns of Bird Flu in Raising Poultry Domestically | | 2008-01-10 05:20:51 Xinhua |
| Egyptian cabinet spokesman Magdi Radi on Wednesday warned that the real danger of bird flu in the country lays in raising birds inside or near homes, although 60 percent of domestic poultry has been vaccinated.
Among the 43 human cases of bird flu including 19 deaths recorded since the outbreak of the disease in early 2006, 40 of them were a result of bringing up poultry in or near homes, the Egyptian MENA news agency quoted Radi as saying in a TV interview.
Radi said the concerned departments were intensifying efforts, especially in rural areas, to complete inoculation of the remaining 40 percent of poultry in the country.
The spokesman also called for speeding up an awareness campaign to explain to people the dangers of close contact with the birds raising in or near homes.
The Egyptian government has been exerting more efforts to prevent further spread of the bird flu virus since the fatal disease caused four human deaths in less than a week in late December, 2007.
Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef on Tuesday adopted a number of measures to combat the deadly virus, reasserting the decision to ban the raising of domestic birds and draw up a future plan to develop ways of bringing up domestic birds in rural areas.
On Jan. 2, the Egyptian higher national committee for combating bird flu decided that all the birds and farm wastes proven infected with bird flu would be destroyed.
Egypt detected its first H5N1 virus in dead poultry in February 2006 and the first human case in March of the same year.

There are only 5 members of the family who are suspected cases.
I misread/misinterpreted the original article which was referring to 9 admissions, not 9 in one family. It was 5 from the one family + 4 other unrelated individuals.

Re: EGYPT - Jan 9, 2008+
LaidbackAl sent me some notes on the suspected cases -- I think he's prolly correct about all of these and I'll include them when I update my list again. Thanks, Al!
Some comments on your current list:
Jan 08 - "Hope" Safwat Lance (25) - Menya Fevers Hospital [flubergasted @ FW]
Jan 08 - Yasmeen Ali Ahmed (4F) - village of Sheikh Hassan - Menya Fevers Hospital [flubergasted @ FW]
I think these two may be from Al Minya Governorate rather than Al Minufiyah Governorate.
----------------------
Jan 09 - "the quality of" Mr. Mohammed (26)
Jan 09 - Mahmoud Al "qulaity of Mr." (25)
I think these are the same individuals from Dakahlia Governorate
--------------
I think:
Jan 09 - Reza Solomon[listed already?]
is the same individual as
Jan 04 - Solomon Solomon Reza (2) - from the village of Gross Bbalkas - Mansoura Chest Hosp. - admitted Jan 3
------------------
I think:
Jan 09 - Nora "the blessing of" Muhammad Muhammad Abdul Hamid (35)
is the same individual as
Jan 04 - Nima Mohammed Mahmoud Abdul Hamid - Mansoura Chest Hosp.

Thanks, that's what I thought
In medicine ( gastroenterology), esophageal varices are extremely dilated sub-mucosal veins in the esophagus. They are most often a consequence of portal hypertension, such as may be seen with cirrhosis; patients with esophageal varices have a strong tendency to develop bleeding.

Do I understand right that this patient escaped from a hospital, but was caught and re-admitted - forcibly? If yes, is this the first time it happens (I have a vague recollection of reading it's happened before, at least in Indonesia for the Karo cluster, but not sure about Egypt). And if yes, does this translate into a "desperate control measure"? Surely, a country's authorities wouldn't bother to catch a sick person if it was only normal flu?

Italian what ???? We'd need to investigate if there's a problem with translation or if they really are talking about some Italian official in Egypt. (I can't do it until late this evening, unfortunately, have to run urgent errands)

They've been looking for another 'bolter' in Egypt -- in Sohag governorate (although they're now not sure that that's where she's really from). They want her to be returned to hospital, too.
Yes -- they brought back Johannes Ginting in Karo, too, didn't they?).

The four people from one family described as being from Kom Hamda are in Beheira governorate -- the male schoolteacher that died was from Cairo governorate.
Someone was from Kom Hamda, but I don't remember who. There might be more than one Kom Hamda, though.

Re: EGYPT - Jan 9, 2008+
Italian Health official(s) in Egypt? It seems very difficult, since the at the best ambassador staff members are usually involved in tourists' assistance. For the news, yesterday a minibus collided with another vehicle and at least two italians of a group of around twenty died as result of injuries suffered; location of accident, near El-Alamein, coastal area.
