    Indonesia confirms another bird flu

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A 16-year-old girl from the outskirts of the Indonesian capital has been hospitalised after becoming infected with the bird flu virus, an official at the health ministry said Friday.

The girl is being treated in a Jakarta hospital for the deadly disease, which has claimed 94 lives in Indonesia, the highest number of any nation. The teenager is the 117th confirmed case here, where the disease is now endemic.

"Two laboratory tests confirmed that she is infected with the bird flu virus," Joko Suyono, an official at the ministry's bird flu centre, told AFP.

Two positive results of tests on blood and tissue samples from a victim are needed before Indonesian authorities confirm a bird flu infection.

The girl, who is from the satellite city of Bekasi, was first admitted to a private hospital there on January 4, four days after she began to feel ill. She was referred to the Jakarta hospital on January 10.

"She is still being treated in an intensive care unit but her condition is quite stable," Muchtar Ikhsan, a doctor treating her at Persahabatan hospital, told AFP.

"We are closely monitoring her condition," he added.

The bird flu centre's Suyono said that two months before she fell ill, several chickens in her neighbourhood had died suddenly.

"She also ate three eggs half-cooked two weeks before getting sick... The eggs might not have been washed properly before being cooked," he said, referring to the fact that chicken faeces, which can carry the virus, may have been on the shells.

But Suyono said that the health ministry had not yet confirmed whether the chickens in her neighbourhood had tested positive for the virus.

Humans are typically infected with bird flu by coming into direct contact with infected poultry, but experts fear the H5N1 virus may mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans.

The head of the world's top agency for animal health said on Thursday in Paris however that the virus has so far proved remarkably stable, which minimised the risk of mutation. (*)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Indonesia records 117 bird flu patients

JAKARTA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A 16-year-old Indonesian girl from an outskirts city of Jakarta has been infected by avian influenza, putting the total number of cases in the hardest-hit country to 117 with 94 fatalities, the health ministry said here Friday.
The girl from Bekasi city has been treated at the bird flu-designed hospital of Persahabatan in East Jakarta since Wednesday after receiving treatment at a hospital in Bekasi since January 4, an official of bird flu center of the ministry Joko Suyono said.
All lab tests indicated that the girl was positively contractedby the H5N1 virus, he said.
"Both laboratories tests of her blood samples are positive," he told Xinhua.
The girl consumed three chicken eggs two weeks ago after scores of chicken died suddenly in her residence in the last two months, said Suyono.
The girl first showed symptoms of the disease with high fever and throat problems on December 30, he said. Then she went to doctors on December 31 and January 2, said the official.
"She has had high pneumonia and leucopoenia with worsening condition when she was treated at a hospital in Bekasi on Jan. 4,"said Suyono.
Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country and home to millions of backyard chickens, is considered as a possible hot spot for spreading the disease, although the country has culled millions of chickens and pigs. Indonesia has been combating highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses, which have slowly and persistently spread to human. Indonesia is faced with major problems in dealing with the spread of the virus, including huge territory, traditional way of raising chickens on back yard.

Indonesian teenage girl tests positive for bird flu

JAKARTA, Jan 11 (Reuters) - A 16-year-old Indonesian girl from West Java has tested positive for bird flu, taking the country's total confirmed human cases to 117, a health ministry official said on Friday.

Joko Suyono, an official at the health ministry's bird flu centre, said the girl fell sick at the end of last month and was being treated at a hospital in Jakarta.

"A few days before falling sick, she ate three soft-boiled eggs. Some chickens also died in her neighbourhood two months ago but it is unclear whether she touched the carcasses or not," Suyono told Reuters.

A hospital official said the teengaer was in intensive care with a respiratory device.

On Christmas Day, a 24-year-old woman from Jakarta who bought a live chicken from a market died from bird flu, bringing the country's death toll to 94, the highest in the world.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way of contracting bird flu, endemic in bird population in parts of Indonesia.

Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate into a form easily passed from human-to-human and kill millions. (Reporting by Mita Valina Liem; Editing by Sugita Katyal and Alex Richardson)

                    New case

Indonesia reports 95th bird flu death

JAKARTA - A 32-YEAR-OLD Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, the health ministry said in a statement on Monday, bringing the toll to 95 in the nation worst hit by the H5N1 virus.

'The patient died at home on January 10,' the ministry's bird flu information centre said, adding that two laboratory tests had since confirmed that she was infected with the bird flu virus.

Two such positive tests are required before Indonesia officially reports a death from H5N1, which has become endemic in the archipelago nation.

The woman, identified only by her initials TM, came from Tangerang, a satellite city of Jakarta, the centre said. She is the city's sixth bird flu victim since October.

She had been taken to hospital on January 9 with a fever, difficulty breathing and pneumonia, but her family 'ignored the advice of the hospital doctor to continue hospitalisation,' the centre said.

The woman's family kept chickens in their backyard, it added.

Humans are typically infected with bird flu by direct contact with infected poultry, but experts fear the H5N1 virus may mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans.

Scientists fear that such a development would likely spark a global pandemic with a potential death toll of millions, and the World Bank has said such a scenario could cost up to two trillion dollars.

The concern stems from past influenza pandemics. A flu pandemic in 1918, just after the end of World War I, killed 20 million people worldwide.

The head of the world's top agency for animal health said last week however in Paris that the virus had so far proved remarkably stable, which minimised the risk of mutation. -- AFP

Jakarta - The death of a 32-year-old woman in West Java's Banten province has brought Indonesia's human death toll from bird flu to 95, the world's highest, Health Ministry officials said Monday.

The woman, identified only by her initials, TM, was from Tanggerang district town, just west of Jakarta, and died Thursday, said Joko Suyono, an official at the ministry's bird-flu information centre.

The woman fell sick January 3 and sought medical treatment six days later at a nearby health clinic before being admitted to Sari Asih Hospital in Tanggerang district with fever, respiratory problems and pneumonia, Suyono said.

The family brought her back home, ignoring the advice of doctors to keep her in hospital, and she died a day later, he said.

"Test results confirm she had been suffering from bird flu," Suyono said

Investigators were still trying to determine how the woman was exposed to the virus, the official said, adding, however, that her neighbourhood is home to backyard farming.

Indonesian woman dies of bird flu - health official

                          14 Jan 2008 09:39:03 GMT

JAKARTA, Jan 14 (Reuters) - A Indonesian woman from an area just west of the capital Jakarta has died of bird flu, taking the country's confirmed human death toll from the virus to 95, a health ministry official said on Monday.

The 32-year-old woman from Tangerang died at her home last Thursday after her family had taken her out of a hospital where she had been receiving treatment a day before, said Suharda Ningrum of the health ministry's bird flu centre.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way of contracting bird flu, endemic in bird populations in most of Indonesia.

"She bought a live chicken and some eggs from a market and cooked them," Ningrum said, adding there were also chickens living in her backyard.

Two tests at two different laboratories confirmed the H5N1 virus.

Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate into a form easily passed from human to human and kill millions.

On Christmas day, a 24-year-old woman from Jakarta also died from the virus after buying a live chicken from a market.

Last week, a teenager suffering from bird flu was admitted to a hospital in Jakarta.

An official at the hospital said that the teenager was stable, but was still on a respirator to help her breathe.

Indonesia, which has now had 118 cases of the disease in humans, has had the most number of deaths from bird flu of any country.

Excluding the latest case, there have been 349 cases and 216 deaths from the disease globally since 2003, according to World Health Organisation data.
